Strong Coastal Storm: Sunday and Monday - | Eastern NC Now

News Release:

Good Morning Everyone,

    The 8am update from the National Weather Service can be found in the email below and attached briefing. Notable changes to the forecast for Beaufort County are as follows:

    Rain

    •  Rainfall totals continue to fluctuate between 1 ½ and 3 inches for Beaufort County, with areas west of Blounts Creek, Bath and Pantego receiving 2 to 3 inches of rain between now and noon Monday.

    Wind

    •  SW winds will continue to be sustained between 10 and 15 mph today, before transitioning out of the North after midnight. Winds will be sustained between 15 and 20 mph on Monday. Frequent gust between 25 and 35 mph are likely during this time, with higher gust possible for areas impacted by stronger / severe storm cells. These wind conditions should begin to subside around 7pm Monday night.

    Storms / Severe Weather

    •  The possibility of severe storms, to include isolated tornados continues to increase, especially for areas east of Blounts Creeks, Bath and Pantego. While severe storms are possible anytime, the greatest threat is forecasted to occur between midnight tonight and 10am Monday morning.

    Please take a moment today to ensure that you, your friends, family and neighbors have a way of receiving weather alerts during the overnight hours, as the greatest threat of severe weather will occur while most people are asleep tonight.

    The next update from the National Weather Service is scheduled for 6pm today. We also encourage everyone to continue to monitor local media outlets for additional information, as well as any watches and / or warnings that may be issued.

    Attached is the latest briefing for the strong cold front and coastal storm that will impact eastern NC today and Monday, bringing a variety of impacts. These are notable changes to the forecast from the previous briefing:

• Severe weather risks increasing for Monday morning. Track of the low becoming more favorable for greater potential of severe weather. Strong, damaging wind gusts and some isolated tornadoes possible. A few strong to severe storms remain possible this afternoon.
• Coastal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, and Wind Advisory issued

    Additionally, the potential of some rain/snow mix to develop Monday afternoon cannot be ruled out as temperatures fall with lingering showers across the northwestern counties in our forecast area. Any accumulations or notable impacts remain very unlikely at this time.
