U.S. Energy Co. Plans To Drill World’s Deepest Hole To Supply ‘Inexhaustible’ Geothermal Energy For Mankind | Eastern NC Now

    A Boston-based energy company has plans to dig the world's deepest hole toward the earth's center, 12 miles deep, and access geothermal energy that it claims would give an inexhaustible source of energy to sustain 95% of the world's population.

    Quaise Energy, launched in 2020 as an Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) spin-off, said it would use its hybrid drilling rig to reach a depth of 12.4 miles in just 100 days; the depth would reach a temperature of roughly 932 degrees Fahrenheit.

    New Atlas enthused:

    That's well past the point where water becomes heated to a "supercritical" state that radically boosts the efficiency of geothermal power extraction.

    The end result: massive, virtually inexhaustible geothermal energy resources will become available practically anywhere on the planet. More or less any existing power station that uses fossil-fueled heat to create steam and run turbines can be connected to a totally reliable, 24-hour supply of green energy that'll keep those turbines turning without a single puff of CO2 escaping, and without the worrying intermittency of other renewable sources like wind and solar energy.

    "To date, the deepest hole humans have drilled reached a depth of 40,318 ft (12,289 m), in a process that took 20 years," The New York Post noted.

    The geothermal mission is based on technology developed by Paul Woskov of MIT.

    Quaise Energy states on its website, "Geothermal does not require any fuels and does not produce any waste. It's truly renewable, abundant, and equitable for all, even in the most challenging energy environments. ... Deep geothermal uses less than 1% of the land and materials of other renewables, making it the only option for a sustainable clean energy transition."

    New Atlas fired a series of questions at Quaise CEO and Co-Founder Carlos Araque, including: "Could an earthquake cut off the bore and disable the power station? "

    Araque replied, "Unlikely. Earthquakes rarely disrupt oil and gas wells. These are similar but 3-5x deeper." He stated that the ultra-deep shafts could last 50-100 years. He also posited that magma would not be released by such deep drilling, asserting, "This cannot happen. Any magma that comes into such a small hole would solidify in the first few meters. Humans have already done this multiple times, and this is exactly what happens."

    "If this solution is deployed at scale, could it be possible for the heat released from under the surface to contribute to global warming?" New Atlas asked. Araque: "The Earth already leaks 40 TW from within, whether we exist or not. Humanity uses 20 TW, so no."

    "Would it not be cheaper and easier just to access geothermal heat reserves closer to the surface?" New Atlas queried. "Of course; it would also be easier to just access wind and solar. The problem is that there is not enough of it to power the civilization we have created with fossil fuels," Araque answered bluntly.

    "Quaise recently raised more than $63 million in funding and is hoping to get its drilling devices operating in the field within the next two years,' The New York Post stated. "Longer-term plans consist of having a working system producing power by 2026."
