UK sees solar power plummet during heat wave | Eastern NC Now

another weather dependency of ''green energy''

ENCNow

The UK's recent heat wave has exposed yet another weather dependent weakness of solar energy.  It seems when solar panels get hot, they function less efficiently.  So when electric customers need power the most, solar energy does not perform like it's proponents contend.  As the Daily Telegraph of London reports:

Particularly cold conditions also see less production of solar energy. The days are shorter and, of course, solar produces nothing at night.  Also cold conditions often see snow or ice or frost cover the solar panels reducing or eliminating power production.

Wind power also goes AWOL during particularly hot or cold spells as wind speeds usually decline substantially during those periods.

Then there are hurricanes which can put solar and wind out of commission completely for many months.  Here is what a hurricane did to one solar farm:

The output of most solar panels is measured under Standard Test Conditions (STC) – this means a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The test temperature represents the average temperature during the solar peak hours of the spring and autumn in the continental United States [1].

According to the manufacture standards, 25 °C or 77 °F temperature indicates the peak of the optimum temperature range of photovoltaic solar panels. It is when solar photovoltaic cells are able to absorb sunlight with maximum efficiency and when we can expect them to perform the best.
