Legendary 60s rocker and founder of two huge bands from that time - the Byrds, and Crosby, Stills & Nash - has died at the age of 81, his representative shared on Thursday.

The singer-songwriter-guitarist's rep confirmed to Variety magazine that Crosby died on Thursday following multiple reports in various outlets. At the time of this publication, a cause of death for the singer-songwriter has not been shared.

Last year, the singer made headlines when he shared that he was done performing live because he was "too old" to do it anymore after more than five decades of performing for fans.

"I'm too old to do it anymore," Crosby shared. "I don't have the stamina; I don't have the strength."

But he also made it clear he was still recording music when he could.

"I've been making records at a startling rate. ... Now I'm 80 years old so I'm gonna die fairly soon," the rocker shared. "That's how that works. And so I'm trying really hard to crank out as much music as I possibly can, as long as it's really good. ... I have another one already in the can waiting."

However, in mid-December, he reversed the decision to stop doing concerts and shared that he planned to be out playing live again soon.

The news of his death came as a shock to many, after Crosby had last tweeted on Wednesday in a post to his hundreds of thousands of followers about the best Beatles song for a rainy day. His answer was "Rigby," calling it "One of his best."

In 1991, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Byrds, and six years later he was inducted again as a member of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the outlet noted.

Following news of Crosby's death, former bandmates and other singers shared touching tributes to the iconic singer.

"It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed," Graham Nash wrote in a statement, the outlet noted. "I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years."

"David was fearless in life and in music," he added. "He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world."

Beach Boys cofounder Brian Wilson wrote, "I don't know what to say other than I'm heartbroken to hear about David Crosby. David was an unbelievable talent - such a great singer and songwriter. And a wonderful person. I just am at a loss for words. Love & Mercy to David's family and friends. Love, Brian."

The legendary folk singer is survived by his wife Jan Dance, their son Django, son James Raymond, and two daughters, Erika and Donovan, from previous relationships, the outlet noted.
