Right ousts left in Finland parliamentary election | Eastern NC Now

Europe's swing to the right continues

ENCNow

It was a good night for the right in Finland as both the traditional conservatives and the anti-immigration populist / nationalist right surged ahead of the governing Social Democrats, which finished in third place.  There are very clear numbers for a new center-right coalition government to replace the outgoing center-left government.  Traditionally, the largest party, the National Coalition Party will be called upon to form a coalition government.

In the 200 seat parliament, the traditional conservative National Coalition Party gained 10 new seats for a total of 48, coming in first.  The populist / nationalist anti-immigration Finns Party came in second, gaining 7 new seats for a new total of 46.  The center-right Christian Democrats held their existing 5 seats, while the center-right Swedish Peoples Party, which represents ethnic Swedes living in Finland held all 9 of their existing seats, and the new center-right libertarian oriented Movement Now won one seat.  The Center Party which represents rural interests won 23 seats, a loss of 8.

On the left, the biggest losers were the (far) Left Party which lost 5 seats to finish with 11, and the Green Party, which lost 7 seats to finish with 13.  Each of them lost a third of the seats they previously held.  The Finns Party had campaigned to "end the Green madness" of climate alarmist laws.

Finland is just the latest in a continuing swing to the right in Europe, with the populist / nationalist anti-immigration parties a big part of that chemistry.
