Immigration propels right to big win in Swiss parliamentary election | Eastern North Carolina Now

populist nationalist right Swiss Peoples Party far ahead

ENCNow

The rightward tide in European politics has now swept Switzerland in its parliamentary election.  The big winner was the populist / nationalist anti-immigration right Swiss Peoples Party which emerged with 62 seats a gain of 9, with their highest vote total ever.  The Swiss Peoples Party has been Switzerland's largest since 2003, but these results put them much farther ahead as the country's leading party.

Smaller parties of the populist / nationalist anti-immigration right also did well.  The Geneva Citizens Movement won its first two seats ever in the Swiss parliament, and the Lega in the Italian speaking part of the country won its first seat ever.  The populist / nationalist right Federal Democratic Union gained one seat for a total of three.  The Christian conservative Evangelical Peoples Party, however, lost one of its three seats.

Opposition to illegal immigration was a major issue for all of the populist right parties.  The Swiss Peoples Party has made this a major issue for many years, and some years ago used a campaign poster that portrayed two white sheep kicking a black sheep off of a map of Switzerland.

With energy prices skyrocketing, the big losers in the election were the two green parties, the Greens and the Green Liberals, which together won 33 seats, a loss of 11.  Two far left parties that had held one seat each, lost both of them.

A total of ten parties will make up the new parliament, with the Swiss Peoples Party in first place with 62 seats, and the Social Democrats second with 41.  The socially conservative Centre Party was third with 29 seats and the center-right Free Democrats fourth with 28.
