German left-liberal coalition teetering as FDP threatens to force early election | Eastern NC Now

leaders call for tough immigration policy after losing badly in state elections

ENCNow

The classical liberal Free Democrats, the odd couple party in the current German left-liberal coaltion, has made a series of demands on the coalition which if not met, party leaders threaten that may bring down the government and force an early national election.  The regular schedule for the next election would be in 2025.

Illegal immigration is at the heart of the dispure.  In the last election, the Free Democrats took a tough position on immigration, running to the right of the Christian Democrats on the issue.  They also took strong conservative positions on energy and on taxes and spending, but on all of these issues, have had to prop up a government pushing policies on the other end of the spectrum.  As a result, they have been losing state elections as their voter base expressed its disgust with their participation in this coalition.  In the three state elections held this year, they have received an average of just under 1% of the vote.  National polls show that they would receive only 3.5%, below the minimum to be allotted any seats.

Bringing down the coalition prematurely and forcing an early election may be their only hope of regaining the support of voters who have been abandoning them.  Party leaders referred to their far left coalition partner, the Green Party as "toxic".  The open borders Greens have been blocking deportation of illegal aliens and other policies to get tough on the issue.

Party chairman Christian Lindner demanded the coaltion "change course on migration", stabilize the budget and set up a plan to induce economic growth.  His deputy chairman, Wolfgang Kubicki warned that the FDP "would not wait until Christmas" and that if the coaltion did not learn from the spanking the voters have given it in state elections, the coalition "will cease to exist".  The leader of the party's Bavarian branch said "we have to be ready to pull the plug" on the coalition.

The most recent national polls in Germany, show the traditional conservative Christian Democrats / Christian Social Union leading at 32%, the populist nationalist anti-immigration right Alternativ fur Deutschland second at 20%, the Social Democrats, who lead the current government at 15.5%, the populist nationalist anti-immigration left BSW at 10% and the far left Green Party at 9.5%.  No other party is above the 5% threshold to win seats.

Now after the landslide by the populist right ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) in Czech local elections, with the populist right winning control of 10 regional governments out of a total of 13, and traditional conservatives winning only 2, it looks like the Czech five party coalition may also be unraveling leading to an early parliamentary election there..

It is not suprising when a party betrays its voters on illegal immigration just to be a part of a coalition with parties of the left that its voters leave them.
