Governor McCrory Releases Statement on Rise in High School Graduation Rates | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release:

Raleigh, NC     Governor Pat McCrory released the following statement after overall high school graduation rates in North Carolina rose to 82.5 percent, a 14 point improvement since the 2006 academic year.

"These impressive graduation gains are a testament to the hard work and talent of our classroom teachers and school principals who have not taken their eyes off the goal of graduating career and college-ready students," said Governor Pat McCrory. "These results are evidence that if we reduce the mandatory testing burden, as we have suggested, and allow our teachers to teach, their creative and innovative spirit will take our students to a higher level of academic achievement."

Governor McCrory said employers should be pleased with today's report.

"For a thriving economy in North Carolina, we have to have students prepared to meet the needs of our workforce and these graduation rates are a positive sign."

The graduation rates were compiled by the Department of Public Instruction and presented today to the State Board of Education. Read the news release from the Department of Public Instruction here.
