Oh how I miss the good old days of shin kicking in the comment section. Now I have to resort to playing the Liberal role to start an argument. O Gene, Where Art Thou? beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on My Dream list post lottery - Part III do not blame him but Alan Jackson made a million dollars writing about my childhood. He was raised just a little piece down I85 from Atlanta in Newnan Georgia and he is 13 years younger than I am, but his dad rebuilt a boat too. One thing for sure though, I would not take a million dollars for my memories riding around Allatoona Lake as a kid.
Here is his tribute song to his dad, Gene. It's called 'Drive.' beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on My Dream list post lottery - Part IIThis was a companion article to one I wrote about our plywood boat. I do know where I got my love for wooden boats. It was when I was about 5 or 6 when dad traded for an old plywood boat and rebuilt it. It was not a Chris Craft but it was a cherished part of my childhood.

The video in the Farewell etaoin shrdlu article is 30 minutes long and reminds me of The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, which was one of my accounts in the early 1980's. I was always amazed at the old antiquated machinery used to print the morning and afternoon paper. You cannot stop progress, but I wonder if people will ever look back at their computer keyboard with the same nostalgia.
There is something to be said for slowing down and getting it right. The newspaper industry was always based on the 'SCOOP' but the technology required some patience which often allowed reflection on accuracy. After they put the first edition to bed it was happy hour. About 4:00 AM for printers in the parking lot or a near by hangout. It was like the birth of a baby every day. The Old Alabama song 40 hour week reminds me of how great our country was and is when the people moved it down the line. beaufortcountynow.com

Back in the old west, the standard technique -at least in the Saturday morning serials- was to throw the gun at the opponent after you have used your 500 shots from a six shooter.
Note the clever use of -dashes-

Thankfully,I will not be around to hear or read my obituary and eulogy.
Here is an heavily redacted excerpt from an article I wrote about obituaries and eulogies. "An Obituary or a Eulogy" My paternal grandmother passed in 1963. Her brother, Drure Stamps who was a Baptist missionary in China for 30 years, preached her funeral. I do have a distinct memory of his interpretation of an obituary and a funeral service. His position was that an obituary could be reduced to two lines. They lived, they died, the ceremony will be at xxxx on xxx,xx,xxx. They were xxx and their relatives were xxxx. However, the passing is a time to rejoice in their life and the eulogy is time to celebrate their life. As I recall he said that because they charged per words in an obituary, you could usually tell how wealthy a person was by the length of the obituary. But you could tell how important they were by the stories told at the wake or funeral. Now when I see an obituary for someone I do not know, the first thing I do is look at the comments. There is solace and redemption in the comments beyond just a short RIP or I will be praying for the family. A personal memory tells their story. One of the comments from tells part of the story. Most of her students later started calling her Ma Goddard or Ma Helen, after she returned as a substitute teacher.

I did some research on Nakoula Basseley Nakoula AKA Sam Bacile. I wondered how it was possible to put him in jail for producing a video. It appears he had a checkered past with the legal authorities and was on probation for a previous drug offense. He was prosecuted for probation violation. Evidence revealed that the administration was searching YouTube for a reason to blame the Benghazi incident. They had several but he was a natural fall guy. I make no excuses for his legal problems but this proves that there is always a way for an abusive government to prosecute someone who is has a different narrative than the talking points.

Commented on Racist, in the American Lexicon, is a Dying WordI think the problem is when people apply individual traits to groups it crosses over the someone to everyone line that it becomes suspect. But it seems to work in politics and most of public life.
If you are good with a hammer everything looks like a nail. I've been guilty as well but I do try to hit individual nails with an occasional glancing blow at the whole nail bin.

Commented on Racist, in the American Lexicon, is a Dying WordI have heard the Liberal Left constantly berate the Conservative Right with scorn over their "hate speech." They often state that certain words are code words for hate speech. That allows them to define all words on their own terms.
My question is this. Is the phrase "The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it," as announced by Hillary "HATE SPEECH" or is it just a list of Liberal code words for "a different opinion?" Is 'deplorable' a hate word or is it just another code word for something that the boys I the hood used to call "Yo Mama Jokes?"

a period is used when you are through a comma when you need to take a breath all others are used just to break the flow as needed now bold and color does add to the interest level i have contemplated writing an article with all bold with only a few non bold letters to see if it will increase readership but some people tell me that is like shouting which of course i would never do that, comma

My normal response when a real person points out an error in my writing is:
"Thanks for being my editor, that is why I don't bother to do it myself". Once a Smarta$$ always a Smarta$$. (your spell checker highlighted two words in the previous sentence. I chose to ignore it.)

Regarding the three great downfalls of men. I had some pre-marriage experience with wine, women, and song, which was the early version of sex, drugs and rock and roll but pretty much the same thing. Today I guess it would be books, pills and memory.
I will defer to your 51 years of experience; however, I question your statistics. My first marriage had a 100% failure rate. The second is in its 42 year of litigation with the outcome still pending. I have proof that the old/new cow theory does not hold water. I have two children which demonstrates that an aging bull….etc. Conclusion: I admitted that I am a jerk, but it did no good. The cost of divorce vs counseling depends on timing and assets. Getting them in the proper order is of most importance; the divorce should come before the assets. I could not help but notice that the bull is married. Look at those clipped horns.

Commented on Where were you on September 11, 2001At the risk of over self-indulgence (too late) I will throw the comment into a post with links to previous articles about him. John Stewart wrote and performed a song 'Mother Country" which pretty much explained that generation. Here is a line and link to that song.
And about these 'good old days' the old lady replied "Why they were just a lot of people doing the best they could" "Just a lot of people doing the best they could" And then the lady said that they did it, "pretty up and walking good" beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on Where were you on September 11, 2001In 2001 my dad was 95 years old. He was a retired Atlanta Fireman. He was not given to expressing his deep thoughts. He was pretty much a realist and self-contained man. He did not wear his emotions on his sleeve, I did and still do. He joined the fire department to have a steady paycheck and security that he lacked as a 23 year old young man during the 1929 depression and following years. About the only advice he ever gave my brother and I about jobs was to follow his lead, get a secure job and you would never be without a paycheck. His prospects as a young man were not very good and I guess he settled in to situation and did the best he could. It was good enough for him and my family.
Over the years I had a contentious relationship with this hardnosed "my way or the highway" man. For most of my young adult life (23 to 26) I did not like the SOB at all. He was a great father and I loved him but I did not particularly like him. Like all sons of a hard disciplinarian, I vowed never to be like him. Fortunately, he lived long enough for me to grow up and understand who he really was. He was a man of limited opportunities who did his best to make his way in life. After the attack on New York, I tried to engage him on why the firemen would go into a burning building when they knew it had the possibility of caving in on them. He had done the same thing on numerous occasions during his firefighting career. His response told more about his generation than it did about him. It also told me a lot about the firemen in New York in 2001. --"IT WAS MY JOB"-- And that my friends are what heroes are made of.
