My partiality for Joe Biden is somewhat akin to hedging my bets. Of all the candidates running so far in the Democratic primary, he is the least dangerous in my opinion. It's kind of equivalent to putting a put option on a stock to protect me in the event of a drop in price (ie Trump loses in 2020). If that is the case I would much rather have Biden as President than anyone else running. My opinion regarding the 2016 election was the Hillary may have been the only opponent that Trump could have beat. There is a large segment of the voting populace that votes on likability or un-likability regardless of policy. I've never been a 'let it all ride' investor, or gambler and feel the same with politicians. I have noticed an increasing amount of frustration among some of my right leaning compatriots regarding Trump's slash and burn style. He is wearing thin with many fence sitters but the extreme left could be his salvation if any of them get the nomination. It is truly a crap shoot at this point.

Justyo clarify, I did not take the picture. It is from WWII when it was perhaps less acceptable, but it makes the point.

I stumbled across this site when looking for the image.

I think we are in agreement that there is no need to immerse ourselves in opposing views.

I grant that I am probably guilty of over analyzing the Joe Biden saga, but what the heck I am Bobby Tony. While Joe may occasionally cross over the lines of personal space, I remember the time when a coach or adult could pat a boy or hug a boy after a strike out and it was nothing more than encouragement or reassurance without someone automatically jumping to the pedophile conclusion. I often wonder how may boys grow to be men without ever learning how to buttress another human without the fear of being branded a predator. We have enough misplaced masculinity hiding behind an insecure persona of toughness. I have seen that overt masculinity fade away when confronted with the overwhelming despair caused by combat and a brother was in need of a hug.

I am always somewhat amused when I hear people say they will never watch FOX NEWS, CNN, MSNBC or whatever (and I have many in my family on both sides of that Rubicon). It seems as if they are afraid of ideas.

Apparently critical thinking is not contagious but dogma is highly contagious and infects that part of the brain that controls rational discourse. The first thing I do before I blindly accept any political pronouncements in the media by anyone is to try and determine their historical position on the Nolan Chart. This allows me to assign the proper weight to their opinion based on my own bias and their bias balanced by perspective. Without critical thinking we are all subject to indoctrination by those self proclaimed PHD Experts.

Not Hardly, but it was said with Drill Sargent authority.

On a more serious note, I think that poor Joe Biden is a target created by the "social warriors" because he is no longer in the mainstream of his parties political thought. It is not sufficient for them to merely disagree with him, like they do with everyone not in lock step with their belief they must destroy him. I had to do some research to find the proper term to describe the current crop of Democratic lefties. Social Justice Warrior seems to be the proper terminology today.

Social Warrior - "A person who uses the fight for civil rights as an excuse to be rude, condescending, and sometimes violent for the purpose of relieving their frustrations or validating their sense of unwarranted moral superiority. The behaviors of Social justice warriors usually have a negative impact on the civil rights movement, turning away potential allies and fueling the resurgence of bigoted groups that scoop up people who have been burned or turned off by social justice warriors." Source Urban dictionary
Search "urban dictionary social justice"

www.urbandictionary.com/author.php?author=TheWokestPerson

To be sure the righties have the same problem when they try to slash and burn anyone who is somewhat to the left of their Genghis Khan mentality. I wondered what would be a good term for those of the right who exhibit the same tendencies as described below by the Urban dictionary. The term I found was Theocrat.

"A theocrat. The right’s version of censorship, mirroring the left’s PC, is RC, usually tinged with nationalism but rarely straying far from Jesus. This is what Lenny Bruce and George Carlin were put to trial for in the 1960s and 70s: the radical Jew and the permanently-lapsed Catholic were religiously incorrect. Here is the familiar paranoia - afraid that the corrupt media would turn their kids into communists, queers, feminists and atheists, these self-proclaimed moral bosses demanded cleansing and censorship from the radio to the comedy stage to the library. They are precisely analogous to the regressive liberal who fears that one joke, one song or one film will turn their children into wife beaters, racists or homophobes, calling for a new McCarthyism."

www.quora.com/What-do-you-call-a-right-wing-version-of-a-social-justice-warrior

It appears that both Social Warriors and Theocrats are in reality so afraid of ideas that their only reaction is to "shoot the messenger" instead of engaging in debate. Both sides are bashing at the foundation of the principal of our understanding of 'Free Speech' and once in power they feel free to trample on the 1st amendment which was designed to stop the government from censorship. Unfortunately a crusader will always over reach while pursuing what they perceive as a higher goal.

Years ago I was accused of being a Space Invader by a young gal at a bar. I told her I had just returned from the war and had lost a good bit of my hearing and needed to get close to hear what she was saying. I had no problem hearing her next comment. I wonder if Old Uncle Joe ever had that problem.

I think it is safe to say that Uncle Joe is stuck in a time warp when it was okay to just "Reach out and Touch Somebody's Hand." I am sure we all know a few huggers in our circle of friends. For the most part they are nothing more than demonstrative people who feel that touching conveys a bond of friendship or perhaps an offering of support. I am also sure that Joe's lifelong habit of offering this kind of physical support is no longer tolerated in the secular world of the average Leftist who sees a racist, pedophile, homophobe, or misogynist in every act regardless of the motivation of the person offering the gesture.

However he poses a real threat to the Socialist that have hijacked his party and they will do everything they can to eliminate him from the field before the primaries. The last thing they want is an alternative choice within their own party and Joe represents a stability that was at one time a mainstay of the party.

How very true. While I never wanted to be the one who required grading on the curve, I did occasionally skew (nudge) the average to one side or the other.

It probably depends on who is doing the counting and graphing.

“Much of the political thinking about violence in the United States comes from unfavorable comparisons between the United States and a series of cherry-picked countries with lower murder rates and with fewer guns per capita. We’ve all seen it many times. The United States, with a murder rate of approximately 5 per 100,000 is compared to a variety of Western and Central European countries (also sometimes Japan) with murder rates often below 1 per 100,000. This is, in turn, supposed to fill Americans with a sense of shame and illustrate that the United States should be regarded as some sort of pariah nation because of its murder rate.

Note, however, that these comparisons always employ a carefully selected list of countries, most of which are very unlike the United States. They are countries that were settled long ago by the dominant ethnic group, they are ethnically non-diverse today, they are frequently very small countries (such as Norway, with a population of 5 million) with very locally based democracies (again, unlike the US with an immense population and far fewer representatives in government per voter). Politically, historically, and demographically, the US has little in common with Europe or Japan.”

Billy Joel has that remarkable ability to turn his demons into songs, which is fortunate for us, but I often wondered how happy he really is or was. There is always a spark of "Off Center" in extremely creative people that we benefit from but it often torments them. With all his success and money, it also reinforces the old adage "Peace of Mind cannot be bought."

As I channel Cliff Clavin (Cheers) which I often do, here is the origin of that quote from IMDB movie database. It is a little known fact-------

"When teaching Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger how to shoot a muzzle-loading rifle, Technical Advisor Mark Baker gave them the advice to "aim small, miss small", meaning that if you aim at a man and miss, you miss the man, while if you aim at a button (for instance) and miss, you still hit the man. Gibson liked this bit advice so much, he incorporated it into the movie, just prior to the ambush scene."

The Army teaches (or used to) Aim and Shoot Center Mass which is roughly equivalent to the same thing. Hey Norm!!

Ah Yes, Billy Joel used to ride with me on my sales calls in towns like Dublin, Sandersville and the ever popular Hazlehurst & Baxley Georgia. It was not really a Saturday but many a Wednesday he was there with some of my closest friends; the other salesmen on the road in the mid-week slump that every salesman knows about..

"And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call "Loneliness"
But it's better than drinking alone"

Not a Billy Joel verse but just as true:

"Holiday Inns and Two Dollar Gin
Can sure look bad in the Morning."

I noticed that the Puppet picture is the same man as both the Master and the Puppet. (Look closely at the tattoos) It appears he is in control of his own destiny. Somehow I found the irony in that picture to be a perfect illustration of thinking someone else is in control of your destiny. It may not be worthy of comment, but I could not resist the temptation.

I realize this is probably beating a dead horse, but here goes.

The whole purpose of these movements is to energize the base in hopes they will join the stampede of making a decision while they are angry or upset. Fortunately the founders realized this and made governing an extremely cumbersome process. Unfortunately both sides operate on the 'ends justifying the means basis' because of a misplaced importance on their own exalted opinion. Both sides want to short circuit the prescribed path to government actions. Trump is merely a more recent example of the tactic used by the left for decades, and it infuriates them to the point they want to destroy him. What I fear is in the process we will also destroy the cornerstones of our foundation. Hamilton and Jefferson both chipped away at the very foundation that they helped to build. Their competing arguments revealed the fragility of the new nation which is just as fragile today as it was then. Like Shakespeare we should be very afraid of those with 'a lean and hungry look, He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.'

As usual, I find movie quote makes the point more dramatically.
From “Clear and Present Danger” 1994

Jack Ryan: I'm upset.
The President: It's understandable. Do you mind
if I give you a bit of advice? You know this because you're smart.
Never make important decisions while you're upset!

Almost every old man I know carries Band Aids in his Wallet. Some have more Band Aids than money since the credit card has become the de-facto currency of today. Many years from now when they dig up my neighborhood, I suspect they will say " Well he was broke for a Doctor!" For that reason, I always carry both money and band aids because I want some future Archaeologist to say. "What are those green pieces of paper?"

I did not know that was a Michael Nesmith song. He was arguably the only musician in the Monkees. Different Drummer is the ultimate 'let him down easy' songs. I am not sure if it is the lyrics or Linda's soulfulness, but as one whose relationships during that era usually ended with name calling and occasional object throwing, I could only wish for such a peaceful ending of a relationship when the other party got tired of all my BS.

But honey child I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees

Yes, and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm saying, I'm not ready
For any person, place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

By the way, my running buddy Reg and I used a variation of the "can't see the forest for the Trees" warning when either one of us got tangled up with a real "B." It was a gentle coded reminder uttered as prediction for a major storm warning.

'would you look at all those trees!"

Aging gracefully but still beautiful Linda Ronstadt is still an inspiration to many of my generation. I guess I still carry a torch for Linda, but unlike many of the old girlfriends, I never got the chance to screw it up like I did with them. Thankfully that provides me with memories of "what could have been"

Just in case some readers missed the underlying sarcasm in this article. The comparison between choice of caliber of ammunition and Maga hats are both, in my opinion, about the same level of importance. Like "0," ZERO or DE NADA!

Both the boy and the Indian Activist were expressing their point of view, which is appropriate. What was possibly missed in this whole media event was the actual provocative actions and chants of the group that identifies themselves as Hebrew Israelites. Their remarks were much more inciting but fell under the media narrative. We are each free to pick sides and make evaluations on what actually happened, but doing so without benefit of all the facts is an exercise in futility solving any problem.

It is possible that all sides have been hijacked by the media searching for another opportunity to direct the narrative rather than report on it. We are being manipulated by a collection of pseudo-journalist that have appointed themselves as the arbiter of all that is important based on their own agenda. While I have never had a healthy respect for journalism since I think it attracts the very kind of people who are prepared to disregard any pretense of objectivity, I am somewhat dismayed by the fact that many of our established news outlets are locked into a mindset that will not allow them to present alternative views in their coverage.

Yoni, is an Israeli resident living in Tel Aviv. If one searches his name several background articles will come up in addition to his YouTube presentations. I was not aware that Mark toured with Bob Dylan nor that the Band played backup during his Electric phase until many years later.

One of the many benefits of being retired is the ability to revisit some of those musical gaps in my life while I was too busy trying to make a career and family. Now at the age of 73, I can marvel over the artistry of Knopfler as well as many others that were just background music on the first pass. I never knew the members of the many bands or anything other than a DJ's introduction when it appeared on Radio. The Eagles were one such group that I enjoyed their music, but had no clue about the names in the band. The Band also fell into my gap of musical knowledge, though I loved The Weight and The night they drove old Dixie down, but never bothered to learn anything about them..

By the time Dire Straits came along in 1977, I had long since lost interest in the day to day details of musical groups. It don't think that I even knew who Mark Knopfler was until I read your original post on Dire Straits in 2015 here on BCN. I don't have a specific memory of Romeo and Juliet prior to your post. Now, I often wonder who else I missed by not knowing the catalog of other groups.

I find it very fascinating how just a few years difference in age can mark our youth and musical influences. It may be just possible that I am missing out on some great current artist, but I have some doubts on that.

Here is the original post that opened up my fascination with Mark Knopfler.

It may be perhaps a bit of both, but the proof would be if a I posted a video of my attempt which is far from possible at my current level of mastery. I doubt that I would ever master the lead portion and the Dylan influence on Mark's phrasing is most difficult. I'm willing to bet that you will find some time to tackle the basic strumming technique though.

It is somewhat infectious once you start the basic four chord repetition and then try to throw in an extra lick or two. Since Romeo and Juliet is in open G tuning, I have had a most difficult time trying to even get to first base.

I realize that you have posted and we have discussed Mark and Sultans of Swing before, but when I ran across this guy, it brought a whole new meaning to guitar virtuoso performances. Setting high goals can be frustrating but occasionally it results in a satisfaction that is the result of a minor improvement in skill level.

For those who may misinterpret my position, the Republicans have tried the go along get along path when dealing with the democrats. The results were a long string of defeated candidates like Romney, McCain, Bush #41, Ford, Dole. What I would like to see is a likable resolute candidate who knew how to take a punch but also knew how to appeal to the basic common sense of the American People. Perhaps a Ronald Reagan who left it up to his staff like Edward Rollins to do the inside fighting.

"Rollins favored a "guerrilla campaign" for the nomination, "conserving our money and picking our shots carefully while Bush and [Senator Robert J.] Dole beat the hell out of each other early on," then prevailing in the delegate-rich, winner-take-all primary in California. "I lost the argument ... Kemp, the third choice of party faithful in all the polls, would wage a front-runner, incumbent-style campaign." Kemp ultimately won no primaries."

Here is an anonymous report of the conversation between President Trump and Senator Chuck Schumer. It qualifies as news because it is anonymous.

Schumer: "Don why can't you just find another word instead of WALL!"

Trump: "I like the word WALL, because it pisses off just the right people!"

Bob Dunning, my seventh grade teacher: "Now I want you boys to shake hands and stop this stupid bickering!"

I made up the part about Bob Dunning, but it seems they are arguing more about semantics than policy to me. Search "Bob Dunning" using the BCN search feature.
