Commented on My Time Being a Religious ConservativeTed McD is correct again! Anyone can throw a curve ball. Now a knuckle- ball is something else. Even the pitcher does not know where it is going, or as Bob Uecker says "The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up."
This is not fair, I think GS is off line and can't defend himself.

Commented on My Time Being a Religious ConservativeGS, it is a good think you did not get to Duke to study under Dr. Rhine.
"Rhine's experiments with Zener cards were discredited due to the discovery that sensory leakage or cheating could account for all his results such as the subject being able to read the symbols from the back of the cards and being able to see and hear the experimenter to note subtle clues.[7] Terence Hines has written: The methods the Rhines used to prevent subjects from gaining hints and clues as to the design on the cards were far from adequate. In many experiments, the cards were displayed face up, but hidden behind a small wooden shield. Several ways of obtaining information about the design on the card remain even in the presence of the shield. For instance, the subject may be able sometimes to see the design on the face-up card reflected in the agent’s glasses. Even if the agent isn’t wearing glasses it is possible to see the reflection in his cornea.[8] Once Rhine took precautions in response to criticisms of his methods, he was unable to find any high-scoring subjects.[9] Due to the methodological problems, parapsychologists no longer utilize card-guessing studies.[10]"

Commented on My Time Being a Religious ConservativeAs old Junior Johnson the race car driver used to say about breakfast.
The Chicken was involved but the pig was committed. I did take one of those Ink block test once. I was prepared and had studied. Every time he held up one of those cards with a blot on it, I held up a blank card. I think I passed because he stopped holding up cards.

Commented on My Time Being a Religious ConservativeTwo Psychologists pass each other in the hallway. The first says to the second, "Hello!"
The second smiles back nervously and half nods his head. When he is comfortably out of earshot, he mumbles, "God, I wonder what *that* was all about?" Two Psychologists meet each other in the street. "Hi," says one, "How am I feeling today?" How many Psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? Just one, so long as the light bulb *wants* to change. How many Psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? Well, how many do you think it takes? "Doctor, I feel as though nobody understands me." "What do you mean by that?" "Ka-Ching"

I never got injured or hurt. Organized sports was never fun for me but sandlot baseball, football and basketball was a daily summer adventure even past high school.

Commented on Time for churches to cut the cord re: gov't?It is not too high on my list of big issues either, but since I have several female acquaintances that are in a committed relationship and my wife worked in an office full of gays when she sold real estate, it is a hot button here in Atlanta. I would just prefer the government to concentrate on those things that the constitution has allocated to them.

Commented on Teachers that made a difference: Bud TheodocionHere is the rest of the story. One of my best friends during grammar school and later high school became the first Team quarterback on the Varsity team. Bill was about my size 5ft 7 inches tall and weighing all of about 130 lbs. Bass High was built in a horseshoe formation where the back playground was visible from all the classrooms on that side of the building. We used to play sandlot touch football during recess. Once Coach Bud was looking out the window, called one of my classmates over, and asks him, “Who is that little kid running the ball now, he’s pretty good”. Gem told him it was me. He just said “Oh” and went back to teaching.
Gem later told me of the conversation and I sought out Coach Bud and asked him why he did not play me when I was on the team and now saying I was a good player. In his kindest manner (not his strong suit), he said that I lacked the self-discipline to be a team player. I was pissed off big time, but it turns out he was right again. Coach Bud was not all about football. Looking back now the term “Testa Dura”, an Italian phrase meaning Hardhead, comes to mind. My mother used it from time to time. I would like to say I have finally learned that lesson, but I would not like to put to a vote.

Commented on Time for churches to cut the cord re: gov't?Having just read the link to the Alabama article, I can see where this would offer positive results for all sides. First the government should never have been involved in this issue at all. Secondly it eliminates any Need for anyone to affirm or deny others the freedom of their expressing of who they want to share their life with.
Now if we could just get the government out of the marriage arena regarding taxes, we will be well on the way to a a neutral stance on by law on personal decisions . established contract law can handle dissolutions of a contract. I neither endorse or condem same sex marriage for the same reason I don't assume the judgement of who goes to heaven or hell. That is a personal matter to be decided by a higher authority Social mores can be used effectively to encourage or discourage personal behavior without the need for laws. It also has the added benefit of taking the discussion of "RIGHTS" out of the equation.

Commented on Religious Sleight of Hand TricksThanks for a more positive post. I have done some basic research on the CBF, which is HQ right here in Decatur, Ga. I think they provide a viable alternative to the SBC. I notice that they refrain from issuing proclamations regarding politics, candidates etc. I include this from their website.
Why does CBF exist? “CBF is a renewal movement among Baptist Christians. CBF exists because of the belief in historic Baptist principles of soul freedom, Bible freedom, church freedom and religious freedom. Soul freedom is the belief in priesthood of the believer and the affirmation that every person has the freedom and responsibility to relate directly to God without the imposition of creed or control of clergy or government. Bible freedom is the belief in the authority of scripture, which under the Lordship of Christ, is central to the life of individuals and churches. Every Christian has the freedom and right to interpret and apply scripture under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Church freedom is the belief in the autonomy of every local church as free, under the Lordship of Christ, to determine their membership and leadership, to order their worship and work, to ordain whomever they perceive as gifted for ministry, and to participate as they deem appropriate in the larger body of Christ. Religious freedom is the belief in freedom of, for and from religion, as well as separation of church and state. CBF’s other core values include biblically-based Global Missions, the resource model of discovering and providing resources to empower churches and individuals to their mission and calling, a commitment to justice and reconciliation, a belief in lifelong learning and ministry for both laity and clergy, trustworthiness and effectiveness.” I could not quibble with any of this statement of purpose. We agree more than you realize or give me credit for. All I was saying is that all viewpoints should be open for discussion and action. The freedom of association of any group is dependent on the group having core beliefs. If they do not have that, they will splinter into other groups. Religions are the proof of that. Why rail against a group because they do not espouse your viewpoint. Just move to group that is more in line with your thinking. I cannot begin to argue scripture or ecclesiastical doctrine with you (if that is what we are arguing about, I defer to you) but I do believe that it is up to the individual to make that determination for themselves. That was confirmed in their statement above. It is my hope that they continue to grow and prosper in their efforts to bring more people into the fellowship. There is room for all viewpoints.

Commented on Religious Sleight of Hand TricksTrusting and naďve is the point. That is why we were born with the freedom of choice. Lying is lying regardless if it is inside or outside. Blind faith in another human being is asking to be misled. You have assumed that shepherd knows all and the sheep know nothing. You are not giving people enough credit to make up their own minds. Regardless of what you are selling, someone has to buy it before it they can be fooled. I have no doubt that there are charlatans selling all manner of false theories. The individual has to decide what they believe.
What is your solution to the SBC dilemma? In the free exchange of ideas, don’t they have a right to run their organization any way they choose?

Commented on Religious Sleight of Hand TricksWhen my local store stops carrying the brand I like, I just switch stores but sometimes, if I am feeling particularly brave, I just try the new brand and see if I like it. That is how I learned to like and eat Escargot. Even though they served in a curled shell, as a naďve layman, I enjoyed it until a “professional food expert” told me it was just French for snails. I still like them but have been unable to find any that are simply labeled as “SNAILS”. Regardless of how they are packaged, labeled or presented on the shelf, it is the “Escargot” that I enjoy. The rest is just packaging. Generally, there are many varieties on the same shelf within the same store. If I don’t like the product, I just leave it on the shelf.
However, we may agree on one thing: beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on Religious Sleight of Hand TricksWhat do you call a Southern Baptist who still harbors “hate” about the conservative takeover of the Convention? Delusional
What do you call a Southern Baptist who has accepted the conservative takeover of the Convention? A Methodist. I am told that even the current Conservative Baptist is allowed to nod when they see each other in the liquor store. Isn’t one of the tenants of the BF&M: A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers? Finally, what do you call a person who does not look to the church or an organization for his salvation but merely a place to gather and worship? A Christian. I know, it is a soft lob over the plate, swing away.

Commented on The JudgeAs a former salesman who has spent a good bit of windshield time with time to think, I would think that Wyatt spent some windshield time as well but I don't think flying a "Spad" over hostile territory leaves any time for contemplation. I do know that the only time I got the football was on a playground or looking for a parking space.
Here us an old Navy joke. The three best things in life are a good landing, a good orgasm, and, a good bowel movement. The night carrier landing is one of the few opportunities in life where you get to experience all three at the same time. (Author unknown, but surely someone who's been there)

I was last there in the 7th grade and I remember the presidios of the guards at the tomb. Being a guard there is one of the highest honors you can get in the service..
I understand they are restricting burials there as they are giving out of space.
