Your ballots are only secret if you vote election day in person. When you vote early in person there is a number put on your ballot that links it back to you. Voting by mail, you have to sign and it also has information linking the ballot back to you.

Interesting that back when there was election day and not election season that working people of all races voted on election day. Polls opened very early and closed around 8pm, giving everyone a chance to vote. If you were in college away from home or the military you voted absentee.
