Commented on Observations on the ObviousReviewing the article after posting, I had some trouble with the time line. I was 5 years old in 1950 so I doubt that I was able to read the book at that time. As with most things involving memory of your childhood we have a tendency to compress dates into an illogical time line. I assure you I was not a reading prodigy at 5 years old. After some research, I found what I think is plausible explanation for my confusion.
"One of the first Disney movies to be shown on television, this was first telecast in January 1955, as part of the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color (1954) television program. It was the first Disney live-action film to be shown complete on television, in two one-hour installments shown a week apart, rather than having the entire film on a single evening. It was broadcast again in the 1960s, in the same format, after the series had changed its name to "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" and the show had moved to NBC." IDMB So, before you award me the Black Spot, I think my narrative is still intact with some allowance for slight embellishments. For those who don't remember the Black Spot, it was enough to kill the Pirate Billy Bones when the blind man gave it to him. en.wikipedia.org

Caveat:
While it is not technically correct, I use carat and karat interchangeably as do most non-jewelers. The Karat is a gold unit for purity, and Carat is a unit for mass which is used for measuring the weight of gemstones and pearls (1 carat is equal to 200mg).

I think a case could be made that she is a windfall for normal people to see how off the tracks some of these wackos are. Her continued 5 minutes of fame may be worth the time if it points out the lack of diverse opinions at our educational institutions. I personally never believed in unlimited "Tenure" for teachers or judges, but I also don't support limiting them or anyone else's free speech. RIP in peace George Carlin your seven words are now mainstream.

In all honesty, I think that Mark Zuckerberg acquitted himself admirably considering that he was talking to a group that did not know their Bit's from their Byte's.
"The best line from the whole testimony was from Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who blasts Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his company's user agreement, suggesting he “your user agreement sucks”....”"go back home and re-write it ... in English and non-Swahili so the average American can understand it." & "You can spot me 75 IQ points, If I can figure it out you can figure it out!" youtu.be

Commented on Metaphors and Reality And Meuller InvestigationMy dearly departed mother raised me not to use profane language. In the event that she is still monitoring my mutterings on the celestial WWW I try to camouflage my transgressions in print.
My dad on the other hand never had a problem with course language, so when quoting him I often have to Redact or Alter his quotes. He also never touched or had much use for computers. That may explain the somewhat 'Multiple Personality' aspect of my post here on BCN.

Commented on Where Has Our Ability To Discuss Issues Gone?I agree with your final statement. If a technology is to be successful it must be economically viable. Competing technologies often improve the overall system.
However the Solar people need to hurry up as there are other alternatives in the wings. "Lockheed Martin has quietly obtained a patent associated with its design for a potentially revolutionary compact fusion reactor, or CFR. If this project has been progressing on schedule, the company could debut a prototype system that size of shipping container, but capable of powering a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier or 80,000 homes, sometime in the next year or so." www.thedrive.com

I had an uncle sum it up pretty clearly when I was in my twenties.
"Spend less than you make, invest the rest" I admit I did not follow that advice until I was in my 30s, but once I did, life became so much more enjoyable and less stressful. Now that I am in my 70s I freely give that advice to my children who are now in their mid 30s and I think it is beginning to take hold.

I was initially referring to Dave Ramsey's 7 Baby Steps to Financial Peace, but could not resist the Bill Murray take off on the technique. I guess most things in life come from incremental success or failure.
It is like the Paratroop instructor told the young recruit. "Don't worry after the first step it is all downhill." Baby Step 1: $1,000 cash in a beginner emergency fund Baby Step 2: Use the debt snowball to pay off all your debt but the house Baby Step 3: A fully funded emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of expenses Baby Step 4: Invest 15% of your household income into retirement Baby Step 5: Start saving for college Baby Step 6: Pay off your home early Baby Step 7: Build wealth and give generously www.daveramsey.com

We both are old enough to remember when drugstores had tube testers for the public. During my Soda Jerk years at Dunaire Pharmacy we had one right up front and the vendor trained us on how to use it but the instructions were fairly simple. Look up your tube number, and it gave you the socket number and setting. Insert the tube and wait for pass or fail light.

Commented on Facebook is Many Things; Often Ridiculous.I doubt that Andy Warhol understood the technology would invalidate his statement that "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." It is still true today but with the addition of the ability to store everything in a silicon chip, we can all be famous several times over and over for our 15 minutes. Just ask any politician who has tripped over his own words when they are repeated back to him in crystal clarity.
I dusted off an old article on technology at your suggestion. It is in the queue.

I don't know if this is relevant to your article but the picture made a connection between guns & Bras. Howard Hughes had an obsession with Jane Russell's Bra in the movie "The Outlaw." He spent quite a bit of time designing a special Bra to enhance her appearance in the movie. Since the Ban the Gun movement is in full swing, I felt it only appropriate that I offer two of my just barely relevant observations.
It's funny how what goes around comes around. I was an active protestor back in the day. While I can't say I was a founding member of the "Ban the Bra" movement I was adamantly in favor of banning that restrictive and sexist garment and allowing for the free flow of .... well you get the point (or points). Atlanta was also the home of the Lovable Brassiere Company which was located on Grayson Drive in Buckhead. They always had an ad in the High School Annual of almost every High School in Atlanta. It was always a treat to sign the "Pegasus" for friends and then flip back to the back and look for the Lovable Ad. Occasionally it would be pristine which gave a young adolescent boy the chance to pen a not so original script to the add. See below ![]()

Commented on Facebook is Many Things; Often Ridiculous. We should all be so lucky. I don't begrudge him the success as a private company but I do think that the premise should be more transparent. I constantly click on "don't want to see this again" in my Facebook timeline. As a result most of my time line is from 'Friends' and I have unfollowed those that overly post political etc. I check back with them about once a month to see if anything of interest to me is posted on their time line.
I agree with your assessment of Local Advertisement. I was not clear enough on the over use of mass ads targeted to me. The one thing the whole social media has brought is the quick scan without applying thought. That is what is currently going on with the political debate. We have devolved into the Shoot out at the Meme Corral.

Commented on Facebook is Many Things; Often Ridiculous.I started using Facebook to keep in touch with old friends and the kids. While I have never been an frequent poster, I did enjoy the ability to keep track of people long since gone from my present circle. Like you illustrate, MZ struck gold when he provided a format for the non-technical public to stay in touch. Perhaps it is the ultimate realization of "If you build it they will come."
For years I have felt that there was an opportunity for a paid subscription of Facebook or a similar format where you could personally tailor the content. Perhaps several layers on a monthly basis which still allows contact with friends but allows you to opt out of advertising at various levels. I think that Facebook and Google have placed the stake in the heart of advertising. It may be a slow death but eventually the clicks or views will be irrelevant due to over exposure. My best example is an add showing Chicken Little, The Wicked Witch, and Pinocchio telling their favorite scams. Then a kid from AT&T tells his story and everyone looks at him with displeasure. The Witch tells him "Words have consequences young man." I still don't know what company they are advertising but I did remember AT&T.

Commented on Perhaps the Last Real Democrat has died in GeorgiaI hate to use another boat analogy, but just like the canoe, my biggest fear is that it only takes one lard a$$ to tip the whole canoe and we all get wet. I don't have a problem with someone rocking the boat, but a boat's stability is based largely on a low center of gravity. The constitution used to provide that for us.

Commented on Perhaps the Last Real Democrat has died in GeorgiaI look forward to the time when I will have a serious dilemma between choosing a Democrat or a Republican. If in fact the pendulum of public opinion does swing from side to side, we may all wake up at some time and realize were are being played by both sides. I am tired of riding in a car whose ball joints are so loose that it feels like a john boat in a Tropical Storm blown from side to side by waves from "port" and "starboard".

I probably should have included the pay off of the sermon but I was striving for brevity. Jesus had faith that his father would provide for all his needs and therefore we should not put our trust for salvation in man or money but in God. He was perhaps not advocating putting thieves as the treasurer but demonstrating that his faith transcended both man and money.
As a layman I probably should stay away from preaching, but our resident Pastor has left the stage. I kept contemporaneous notes of our pastor's sermons. When he left Candler Park (2003), I subscribed to his written sermon blogs. Here is a bit more about John Ballenger preachermusings.wordpress.com

While it may sound blasphemous I remember a sermon from my favorite pastor at Candler Park Baptist. Here is the short version:
The reason Jesus had a money bag man was so he knew who to watch. He put a thief (Judas) in charge of the money because he was putting his money where his mouth was. But in knowingly giving dishonest Judas the moneybag, Jesus specifically modeled for us where not to put our trust. I am sure this was not an original sermon by the pastor but like many others it struck me as right on point about putting too much trust in others regardless of their profession or declarations and assertions.

My tendency (some call it an obsession) is to always follow the money and look at the details. A quick unverified check would indicate that McCabe's punishment would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,000,000 over the rest of his life. In keeping with the going market for tell all books (Look for Comey's new book) I doubt that Andrew McCabe will be hurting from a finical standpoint. I am sure someone will be willing to pay him a healthy book advance to cove his short fall in pension income. He might even be able to self finance his wife's next run for office.
"On Sunday, McCabe will be 50 years old (qualifying him for an FBI pension) and will have served 21 years with the FBI. So, his annual pension is $56,000. 1st 20 years 1.7% x 20 = 34% 34% x $160,000 = $54, 400 21st year 1% x $160,000 = $1,600 All 21 years $54,400 + $1,600 = $56,000 With an average life expectancy of, say, 85 … McCabe’s aggregate expected pension will be almost $2 million." kenhoma.wordpress.com

Commented on TMc: Electoral What?Something about your map triggered a few memory SYNAPSES in my mind. I did not have to research far to find the connection. Long ago "There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields" (Gone with the Wind) before the North invaded that sacred territory called the South, there was a similar map showing the divisions within the land mass of North America.
![]() You and I were raised in that part of the country where "Forget Hell" and "The South will rise Again" were the losers lament. While I have never felt any kinship to the extremely flawed underpinnings of the Southern economy, I must admit that I gain some satisfaction with the creeping invasion of the North by the States formerly known as the Confederacy. It appears that the Redish states are creeping into the blue eminent domain slowly but surely in the 2016 map at top. And to think it took a confirmed Yankee from New York to begin the transformation. Is this a great country or WHAT?

Commented on What Will the Fake News Do Now?There's an old expression, called Greener's Law: "Never argue with a man that buys ink by the barrel."
That all began to change with spread of personal computers. We now have the modern equivalent of barrels of ink residing in small silicon chips of sand available to all. The power of ink Started to sink When words took flight On screens of light. (unknown) No one likes to relinquish power and the "media" is merely experiencing the transition that occurred with the replacement of the old horse and buggy, mule and plow, the monk and quill, the Guttenberg press and now the keyboard and world wide web. Fake news has been around since two cave men tried to explain to their wives where they had been for so long. All that has changed is the method of transmission. I agree that President Trump has upped the ante with his Tweaks in 280 characters or less. He even found out how to use the ... to make two Tweaks seem like one. Liberals like CONTROL! It makes no difference if it is WORDS OR GUNS it is all about CONTROL.

Having said that I probably have over 40 hats with various sayings or jokes collected over the years. Most of the evidence has been sprinkled across the articles on BCN.
