This article brings up some very concerning issues about Williams, who supports him and why? Is this the old boy system at work? Does it indicate future corruption? Certainly someone so eagerly sought after and endorsed by Democrats and defense attorneys brings up questions about whether Williams is a true Republican. How impartial would he be as a judge? Seems like he'll be soft on crime if defense attorneys are supporting him that much.

I suppose the most troubling thing is the question of ethics. Not only of the judges mentioned in the article and their decision to be involved in a campaign, especially outside their own party, but Williams' ethics or moral compass himself. A review of the Williams campaign finance reports does indicate the majority of his funding (between 67 to 87 percent based on differing analyses but clearly a majority) comes from defense attorneys. What will he owe them afterwards if elected? What do they expect in return for their support? However, the biggest concern for me came in the mail. I got a letter promoting Williams, a palm card or brochure, that came in an envelope with a return address of Jones & Sasnett, P.A. in Washington, NC. The postage wasn't a peel and stick stamp but a Pitney Bowes stamp machine ink printed postage mark. It appears from this that Jones & Sasnett paid for the mailing, a campaign contribution. This seems to violate Campaign Finance laws about taking contributions from corporations or businesses. Whether this is a violation of Campaign Finance law or not and the repercussions are above my knowledge level. It certainly brings up serious moral questions in addition to legal questions regarding Williams and his campaign. It is even more concerning when you expect someone wanting to be judge doesn't seem to follow rules, laws, and seems questionable in their activities to get there.

Bravo to the school board for finally doing something right. I think if you listened closely enough last night you could hear the Big Cheese gently weeping into his pillow.

If Joe Biden wins the election we as American citizens can kiss our freedom goodbye and he is 100% going to fix the United States to become a communist country just like China and he will also make sure he and his Washington cronies change the banking system to where they will have FULL CONTROL of our hard-earned money. It's NONE of his business on what and how we spend our money. President Trump is the only one who can make sure this NEVER happens to us here in the United States. It's Trump all the way for President in 2024. People, it's up to us at the polls. Vote the right and only way to get the United States back on the correct path before it's too late for all of us. Biden already trying his best to take our guns away and destroy the 2nd Amendment and now they want to control us 100% or be punished just like those poor truckers in Canada. What's this world coming to? Wake up America BEFORE it's too late for any of us...

Auditor, you are certainly correct that this information is held inside the city's books. Auditors can not add or delete information, only verify and perhaps reorganize. The problem is that the books are not open to the public. Since November 4th, I've requested three simple bits of information several times: 1. If any debt has been added during this fiscal year, and what our current total debt is. 2. What percentage of the budgeted amounts has been spent in each fund and how much we are below budget. 3. If we wanted to pay off any debt, how much is unrestricted and available for us to do so. When I asked Greenville for this information I received it in a few hours. I have yet to receive it from Washington.

Your accusation of my ignorance or deception is curious. I do not claim to be anything more than a citizen-representative reporting back to my fellow citizens. While I am certainly not a municipal accountant, and I suspect neither are the other 99.99% of residents and former city councilmen and mayors, I have a rudimentary grasp of finance and accounting. Like most, I rely on the high-paid director of finance, the finance department, and the expensive outside annual audit for information. When none of that information is supplied expeditiously or intelligibly, I have little recourse except to become suspcious and seek outside opinions. If you have this skillset, I highly encourage you to investigate and I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

My goals are pretty straightforward. I want to lower our property tax rate and naturally the budget is a fairly big part of that. The audit is inordinately important to me because I cannot get these numbers from our finance department and I'm trusting that I will get them from the auditors.

I do not leap to the conclusion that things are nefarious. The state auditor said that sloppiness is far more common than graft. What I am saying is that this information has been elusive. I cannot speak to past experience or history, I can only speak to my personal experience since November 4th. And I intend to continue relaying that experience openly to all who care to hear about it. I appreciate your reading and I appreciate any advice and criticism.

I called out the city manager about our deplorable financial state. He could have produced facts that made me look like a fool if I was wrong. Instead he resigned. Really, that says it all.

Stan, we have a real opportunity during this election. Lou Hodges is not running; William Pitt withdrew from the race; and Brooks barely skated in last time. That's three potential seats. If the conservatives in Washington really turn out this year the Republicans will control the Washington City Council for the first time in living memory. We can accomplish amazing things. If we use that wave of enthusiasm we can tip the scales during the County Commisioners race and we can have the the city and county controlled by conservatives! This is the year to make great things happen! Let's ruduce property tax to nearly zero percent, trim the budget by 10%, cut utility costs by 10%, and ferret out all corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse!

I'm absolutely amazed at your description and photos of the neighborhood. I was born there in the early 60's spent my first seven years there before we moved away. We bought a small house near the entrance, then built something bigger a few years later. After 40+ yrs It's exactly as I remember it.

It is interesting that Gene Scarborough submitted a thought-provoking editorial on hate and then small minds attached a ridiculously skewed "poll" to make the point that the hate wins. We as a Christian nation have surely lost our way and are making ourselves the laughing stock of the world. It is not our President doing this to is - it is small-minded people who refuse to see beyond their own personal wants and prefer to deny others their true needs. This is not the way of Jesus Christ and it is certainly not the way of this country.

To those who prepared the poll - I am not "enamored" by my President. As I have told Mr. Scarborough, I respect my President and his love for his country. I know this to be true because I know of people in his life. Strong, well-educated people who have worked their entire lives to enrich other's lives and come from families who for generations have done the same for this country. These are people who know the President away from the cameras and outside of the Oval Office. These are people who know and believe in his wisdom and strength. These are positive, forward-looking people he chooses to allow in his life.

I am not "enamored" by this President because, for all my faith in him and his wisdom, I know he has made decisions that I don't agree with. However, as a US Air Force Veteran, mother of three strong young men, one of whom has been to war, I know that I don't have access to the military intelligence information, intel reports from other countries, and access to the smartest minds in the world in order for me - a mere citizen who elected this man to act my behalf in such matter, to make the decisions he has made.

Your arm-chair quarterbacking of the Office of the President of the United States, while funny to you and your ilk, is an embarrassment to the American People. There are "those who can" who run for office and are elected to act on your behalf, and then there are those "Who just don't get it" who would rather use very small minds to tear apart a fellow American just because it's funny, and more probably, because they feel that their own influence has been lost in this world - to someone who does not look like them, act like them, or understand their leftover ways of the days of glory before the Age of Reconstruction.

Should our President have known the flag was for Wisconsin? Yes? Is this story even true? Highly doubtful. The media in the US is owned by 6 major corporations and 5 have no love lost for our President. If this story had a shred of truth, it would have been on constant replay on CNN.

Gentlemen - take your anger and your hate and redirect it into something that helps this state and this country. And if you can't do that, then please remember the good Christian rule that everyone learned as a child - If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Thanks for the comments and thanks to Stan for the automatic notification when someone comments on one of my older articles. At 77 years old, I realize that I am probably far out of touch with the various local venues for aspiring entertainers, but I can’t help but wonder if there are still troubadours touring the country in small bars, VFW clubs, or Bowling Alley entertainment rooms. My time on the beer trail was full of such joints. It was a time when entertainers drove in cars, Greyhound, or trains, or parhaps with a guitar strapped over their shoulder and a thumb in the air from town to town honing their talent. Many never made it to stardom but a few like those mentioned in the comments did and we are all the better for it. As Stan said, Gordon created songs that will never be forgotten until we too pass. There are those who say, like the old blues singers, you can’t write a sad or inspirational song until you have lived a sad or inspirational life. I don’t know if that is true but thank God that these songs were written.
Thanks also to Andrea Hayward Nickerson for your parent’s participation in those days of yore. Atlanta is a city that doesn’t hold much to maintaining historical buildings. I have not been by the old Bistro site in years, but I do occasionally visit The Varsity -1928- which is not far from there. I will be sure to drive by and see what a atrocity has been built on that lot.

I received a private message with some corrections to this article. See Below: Thanks to Sharon Powel for this correction. I have removed her Email Address for privacy reasons.

Hi, Bobby!
I just ran across this article by you , and wish to thank you! There are, however some discrepancies that I would love to let you know about. I know that you don't won't be editing this article, but, I have spent many, many years straightening out misunderstandings on behalf of the Hall's actual owners. The club was never owned by Jack Tarver, but he did run the club under a management contract, as did Alex Cooley prior to Jack's tenure. The owners' names are Robert Dulong, and Maurice Ehrlich. Bob is still around, but Mo passed away a couple of years ago.
The reason we closed was that Broadview Plaza was bought by a development company which determined that a disco would be better placed in our location and did not renew our lease. We had to scramble to find a new location, and we staff members worked hard to get us moved. I would be happy to help with any future articles, or to answer any questions you may have.

Sharon Powell
