The Washington, NC Olympic and Sprint Triathlon, 2011: Chapter I - Getting Started, and Then the Finish | Eastern North Carolina Now

This is the part where these fitness athletes mesh with the remnants of what was once some part of an erstwhile swamp. Feels like Downeast to me: Above. This guy I know: Sam Fulmer steadies himself for his 750 meter sprint in the warm summer waters of the Pamlico River: Below. One of the cool things that I identify with is that older gentlemen, like Sam here, will not settle into aging process without the vital activity of strenuous exercise.     photos by Stan Deatherage

Believe it: Sam was ready, and he did finish the entire sprint competition - 750 meters swim, 13.1 mile bike, 3.2 mile run. Congratulations Sam: Above. Young and old were there to watch the young and old competing in both categories of this event. I have many pictures that make this readily apparent: Below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

One last look at those entering the drink and one first look at those exiting the Pamlico River: Above and then below.    photos by Stan Deatherage

Consider the intractable fact that it is 7:00 am in the morning, these Triathlon competitors have been here for a while, since before dawn, engaging in the final preparations before the onset of the event, and imagine, before you have a the golden light of morning opportunity to soak in the rich beauty of the moment, you are plying through those murky Pamlico waters to complete your 750 meters swim (sprint category), or your 1,500 hundred meters swim (Olympic category)- the first leg of the competition. It doesn't matter whether you are old or young - male or female - you are in the drink, and you have begun: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage.

Marc Primanti of FS (Finish Strong) Series has just provided this article a backlink on their great website (and I don't say that about many websites).

Naturally, we reciprocate by giving fine websites, like theirs, a comparable backlink.

Also Marc sent me the names of some of the competitors to list on our article. We want this, and since BCN gets so much traffic, and we do leave these articles up for perpetuity, these spirited efforts of others will be remembered, and are a fine example of the human will to succeed.
