"Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't It:" Staunton, Virginia | Eastern North Carolina Now

The tracks heading away from the depot carried us along a ridge that afforded us some excellent vistas of Staunton, as we trudged through the snow until we reached Fayette Street, just up a hill that led us to the Newton Historic District: Above. As I turned back to look toward the depot as I surely heard a train whistle, I noticed a young girl, bundled against the freezing temperatures, with her dog walking in the opposite direction on the tracks: Below.

The train whistle was not so distant, and within moments, I viewed the accompanying Amtrak passenger train, heading west and then south to Clifton Forge, Virginia: Above. Further down the tracks, I turn northeast to view the skyline of Staunton's Historic Business District, where I had just walked from: Below. We walked up the aforementioned Fayette Street and meandered a bit until we made our way to Madison Street. I liked this picture because it represents well just how hilly Staunton is: Below.

This old deposit of railway timbers was actually a former bridge that had fallen into disrepair and was now replaced by the current tract that we, me and Stanhope, walked upon. Overgrown by vines, i have to wonder just how long ago this former bridge was in service. Was it used during the Civil War? Above.

As we headed deep into the Newton Historic District, and with the sun sinking on this day, two removed from the shortest day of the year, I was taken by these two antebellum homes with iron fences and large semi-ornate gates: Above and below.

Heading east on Beverly Street, from the Newton Historic District, I noticed yet another ironwork fence surrounding Trinity Episcopal Church: Above. Looking east down Beverly Street, we see so many ornate masonry structures as i head back to the warmth of my vehicle, a 1996 Thunderbird that is one steady steel beast: Below.
