Join The BCCC Foundation For A Trip To See Phantom Of The Opera | Eastern NC Now

News Release:     Join the Beaufort County Community College Foundation, Saturday, Oct. 18, for a trip to Durham to see the stage production of Phantom of the Opera, Broadway's longest-running musical.

    The trip will also include time for a visit to the renowned Paul Green Theater in Chapel Hill with a lecture by Professor Jeff Phipps.

    The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $200 per person. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 10.

    The price of the trip includes transportation to and from Durham, lunch and tickets for seats in the orchestra section for Phantom of the Opera at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.

    The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:30 a.m. and travel to Chapel Hill for a tour of the Paul Green Theater. Located in the Center for Dramatic Art on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus, the Paul Green Theatre is a 500 seat facility that was completed in 1976. The theater is home to PlayMakers' six annual Mainstage productions as well as professional actors, directors and artists from across the country. It is named for the American playwrite, known for his depictions of North Carolina during the early 20th Century. He is best remembered for his outdoor dramas, including The Lost Colony, written in 1937.

    The group will travel from the theater to lunch at Kitchen in Chapel Hill. Recently voted the best French restaurant in that town, Kitchen serves traditional French bistro fare made from local ingredients in an informal environment. Travelers will have a three-course lunch that includes appetizer, entrée and dessert.

    After lunch, the group will travel to DPAC for a matinee performance of Phantom of the Opera, which opened on Broadway in 1988 and has been performed there more than 11,000 times. Based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux, the musical's central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius. The beloved story and thrilling score – featuring songs such as "Music of the Night," and "All I Ask of You" - will be performed by a cast of 52, making this production one of the largest now on tour.

    After the performance, participants will depart Durham for the trip home and enjoy light refreshments on the bus.
