News Release:

RALEIGH, N.C.     Hundreds of citizens from all across North Carolina gathered in Raleigh Tuesday for Religious Freedom Legislative Action Day in support of protecting religious freedom.

"Tuesday's legislative day of action in support of religious freedom was a great day for North Carolina," said Kami Mueller, spokesperson for the coalition of state leaders and national experts on religious freedom. "When 90 percent of the voting electorate polls in favor of protecting religious freedom, it should illicit the ears of decision-makers with a sense of urgency. When it is the overwhelming will of the people and when it is the right thing to do, it will always be worth fighting for regardless of the timeline."

Jamie Smith and his wife, Eliana, of Charlotte made the day a family affair with the hope of showing their three young children the importance of being involved in protecting their family's freedom to live and work in accordance to what they believe. They also wanted their children to know that that there is a right way to bring about change and demonstrate what that looks like in a hands-on capacity.
The morning's events started at Lt. Governor Dan Forest's office, the Hawkins-Hartness House, with remarks made by Forest, Kellie Fiedorek of Alliance Defending Freedom, Rep. Dan Bishop, John Rustin of the North Carolina Family Policy Council, and Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition.

After citizens checked in at the tent located at Halifax Mall, they walked into both the Legislative Building and the Legislative Office Building to meet and speak with their legislators, urging them to take action to protect religious freedom in North Carolina.

"This is by far one of the most important issues of our day," Jamie Smith stated. "It impacts every part of our lives. I wanted our representatives - Rep. Charles Jeter, Sen. Jeff Jackson, and the other lawmakers in Raleigh - to look into the eyes of our three children and vow to take action to protect their God-given right to stand for a set of beliefs and not be thwarted by the overzealous hands of government."

"As a mother, we pray for a world where our children may grow up without fear of the government forcing them to do (or not do) something that violates our faith," Eliana Smith explained. "We want North Carolina to help secure that future for our children. My husband and I pray that Rep. Jeter, Sen. Jackson, and others will fully support the religious freedom bill."

Religious Freedom Legislative Action Day was organized by a large coalition of like-minded organizations, non-profit groups, and national experts on religious freedom. Many legislators attended the event as a display of their support for the position their constituents overwhelmingly hold.
