When Pursuing A Bad Person, As You Are About To Apprehend Him, Stop & Give Up The Chase | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Deadly Pursuits

My local newspaper has run an article about Police Pursuits. It seems that some of us are concerned that these pursuits are dangerous. It is being purposed that the police be prohibited from engaging in pursuits of criminals or, at a minimum, the police officer be required to call off the pursuit, if said pursuit were to become dangerous.

"Becomes Dangerous" ... that is an interesting phrase. When will a pursuit become dangerous? It seems plain enough to me. Pursuits become dangerous when the police officer gets to the point in the pursuit where the pursued is about to be caught up with. This is an easy fix...

      •  Police officers should be required to run slower.

      •  More specifically, police officers who have the ability to run fast should not even be hired because adrenaline might take over and, even if they are trying to run slowly, they may get caught up in the heat of the moment and run too fast and find themselves in a dangerous situation.

      •  My "Foolishness...Or Is It" juices are flowing. Allow me to carry this a little further. I can just see the defense attorney making this impassioned plea in court...

"Your honor, everyone in this courtroom is well aware of the inalienable right of a criminal to run away. My client fully intended to run away. He was intent on doing this, not simply to get away with his ill-gotten gains, but to avoid a situation that would have endangered the police officer. As my well intentioned, client was about to make his escape, another police officer appeared on the scene and blocked his route of escape. This second police officer's appearance deprived my client of his planned getaway. I ask you to throw this case out of court because my client was deprived of his right to run away. I'm sure this is expressly stated in the constitution somewhere and, if it is not, it should be."

    Would I kid u?

For a short while my son worked for a finance company and installed GPS trackers on the cars. They could disable the ignition, locate the car and have it repossessed at will if the loan became delinquent. Most new cars already have tracking capability now and the data can be downloaded for us in a wreck or speeding incident. This whole IPhone debate now is a smoke screen, I am researching it now.

It reminds me of old Chief Dooley in Clarkston (1960-63), who would say if you try to run away, I will just go to you house and your dad and I will sit on the porch and wait for you to come home. Your choice.

BT: A Drone can follow the Suspect. Car chases are obsolete. I plan to plagiarize this article and comments.

I was just being a bit facetious with the dart comment based on a YouTube video I saw recently in my automation searches. Since I was operating on IPhone mobile, I did not take time to look up the original source video. It is a takeoff on the old James Bond Goldfinger, which as I remember correctly would allow James to stop for a quick one while tracking. Sorry, I did not men to step on your comment: Here is the video link:

Dart gun is the same concept as Harpoons but plagiarizing is okay on BCN.

Every person is issued a small dart gun with GPS monitor and RFI. If they see an idiot in a car making serious traffic violations, They shoot the dart into the trunk.
The Hov-Hot lanes are reprogrammed to accept the signal and alert the gestapo ugh , I mean police.
The cops track and pull over anyone with three darts and make a polo-citizen arrest. I may qualify for the SWMIIT or YMIIT club?

A Harpoon System for the front of police cars on my design desk. Like Whales, the speeding car could be pulled to a stop. A small hand carried version will be popular.
I thought of this while fishing. Hunters kill; fishermen catch. Makes sense.
