My brother, Thomas, is one of the toughest guys I know.

Yet he's also one of the most compassionate.

Thomas is a big, strong guy.

He makes a girl feel safe in a dark alley; rescues small animals from tall trees; isn't afraid to pick up a hitchhiker; changes a flat tire for an elderly, stranded motorist in a driving blizzard; and basically lives on high alert to show compassion.

His law school attendance was interrupted by two deployments - to Haiti and Bosnia.

He always went above and beyond for the men he led.

As an attorney, he continues his legacy of compassion.

This humble, good-looking guy - who happens to be 6'6″ - lives his life with a heart full of compassion.

    Compassion defines his life.

His life inspired this thought during one of my quiet times: Humility is the wellspring of compassion.

When we have a deep sense of the mercy of God, then no matter how successful or strong we believe we are, we choose to live humbly.

God changes our perspective of ourselves and makes us compassionate toward others.

As the Bible says, we understand that living humbly is a good thing: "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" (Micah 6:8)

When we live with a sense of God's presence, we recognize that His mercy toward us has opened a pipeline to His strength and thus, we can show compassion without fear.

We truly do love mercy and walk humbly - even when doing justice - because God is our strength.

We have great humility because of His great mercy to us.

Yet we have great strength because we know His love is stronger than the grave.

This is how my brother lives - in the power of humility.
