Top Democrat Urges Biden to Duck Debates | Eastern North Carolina Now

It's been a busy couple of days for campaign news.

Last week, CNN's Joe Lockhart, Bill Clinton's former White House spokesman, cautioned the Biden campaign that they would lose if they allowed their candidate to debate the president.

Lockhart said, "Whatever you do, don't debate Trump. Trump has made more than 20,000 misleading or false statements according to the Washington Post. It's a fool's errand to enter the ring with someone who can't follow the rules or the truth. Biden will undoubtedly take heat from Republicans and the media for skipping the debates. But it's worth the risk as trying to debate someone incapable of telling the truth is an impossible contest to win."

This publication predicted this Democrat strategy months ago. This is likely the trial balloon in the media rollout of the debate duck. Biden team thinking: We're doing great in the basement. Why should we leave? Ted Cruz gets the drift.

Meanwhile Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller is setting up the hit on Biden's veep choice. "It is consequential in the fact that for Joe Biden, his VP pick is in many ways his political living will. He's already said he's going to be a transition candidate on to the next generation. He's refused to say that he would run for a second term, so it really does matter who is picked," he said on Sunday. The president, aggressive as always, is projecting a confident manner.

He has the money to do so, as the cash-flush Trump campaign begins advertising in states that have early mail-in voting. They're likely going up in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as all start sending absentee ballots in September. Michigan and Minnesota allow in-person absentee voting starting in late September.

Trump press honcho Hogan Gidley commented on it Friday: "It makes sense that a newly minted campaign manager, stepping up from the deputy role, would want to look at things and take inventory, and figure out where we would want to move with some strategic targeted messaging. We're going up full force with some targeted ad buys the first part of next week."

And there's more to come, as Trump can outgun Biden in campaign media. Advertising Analytics, a tracking firm, says the Trump campaign already has a massive $146.5 million in pre-booked commercials to run from Labor Day through Election Day. That's a boatload. Biden will not match it.

But even with that cash advantage, Fox News host Steve Hilton is worried about the Trump campaign and said so on Sunday: "Where is the energy? Where are the ideas in the hope for the future? Two weeks ago we were promised exciting policy announcements in the next two weeks. We are still waiting.. You don't win elections with Facebook ads or digital strategy or whatever. Sure, they can help, but you win elections with ideas about the future, what you will do for people, the changes you will bring. We don't see any of that from the Trump campaign... They seem to be sleepwalking into a Biden presidency and a total calamity and a Democrat takeover, House, Senate, law, unconstrained power to implement the most left-wing agenda ever put before the American people... Wake up. We need to see a major Trump policy announcement or policy speech every week between now and November. Nothing else will do. Get on with it, or the country is sunk."
