March 11 information session set on BCCC program for high school students | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

An information session has been scheduled for March 11 at Beaufort County Community College for high school students, their parents and members of the public interested in learning more about Career and College Promise.

Career and College Promise gives high school juniors and seniors from public, private and home schools within the BCCC service area the chance to earn credit for college courses while they are still in high school, according to Lisa Hill, director of High School Programs at BCCC.

The session, set for 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of Building 10 on the BCCC campus, will give those attending the chance to learn more about the program in time to register for classes later this month. Career and College Promise classes for new enrollees will begin in the fall.

Career and College Promise provides eligible high school students the opportunity to speed the completion of college certificates, diplomas and degrees that lead to a four-year college or university or provide entry-level job skills tuition-free while the students are still in high school, Hill said.

That could mean a savings of about $25,000 towards a four-year degree at a public university for college-bound high school graduates and could mean a better-paying job for high school graduates headed toward careers, she said.

BCCC will offer two "pathways" for students in Career and College Promise - a set of courses for students who plan to attend a four-year college or university after graduating from high school and a set of courses for those who plan to enter the workforce after high school.

To enroll, students must meet certain eligibility criteria and must apply to be admitted to a specific pathway.

Once enrolled, students must continue to make progress toward high school graduation and maintain a 2.0 grade point average in college coursework after completing two courses.

For specific eligibility requirements or to apply, prospective students should contact Hill, at (252) 940-6497. Campus tours are also available to prospective students upon advanced request.

Information about the Career and College Promise Program is also available on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu.
