Raleigh political boss Berger tries to muscle in on our state senate seat | Eastern North Carolina Now

Ever wonder why a candidate who files at the last minute suddenly has the funds to churn out a blizzard of campaign postcards? It comes from being the front man for a powerful Raleigh political machine with access to lots of money.  The issue in the 3rd District State Senate race is who should control our legislative seat - the people of Craven, Beaufort, and Lenoir Counties or the political bosses in Raleigh?

There has been an unfortunate pattern in recent election cycles of Raleigh political operatives trying to dictate who will represent various districts instead of the people living in those districts.  Candidates are recruited out of Raleigh and often largely funded from Raleigh.  Power obsessed state senate boss Phil Berger, nominally a Republican but mainly just trying to maximize his own power, is one fo the very worst.  Candidates recruited and backed by the Berger machine are expected to toe Berger's line in Raleigh, regardless of what the folks back home think or want.

Phil Berger is the same sort of '"Republican" as a Mitt Romney, Mitch McConnell, or Liz Cheney.  He often fails to act much like a Republican, muscling through the legislature most of liberal governor Roy Cooper's key agenda items including letting biological men into womens restrooms (repeal of HB2), NC's Green New Deal (HB951), the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, and a new Cooper-inspired slush fund called NCInnovaton.  Berger even publicly endorsed a liberal Democrat judge running against a conservative Republican in the 2022 election.

Berger's candidate in the 3rd district primary is first term New Bern Alderman Bob Brinson.  Berger and his allies have been twisting arms of state senators aligned with him to contribute to Brinson. He is likely doing so with special interest groups he has done favors for as well.

A political group aligned with Berger, called Restore NC, Inc. has been churning out postcards for Brinson, including a recent very nasty one that rehashes a hit piece done some years ago by the liberal Raleigh News and Observer against conservative grassroots candidate former State Representative Mike Speciale.  Although actually based in Raleigh, this groups rents a box at a private mail box firm in Carteret County to create a false illusion of being local.

Restore NC is run by a longtime Berger political operative named Knight who is based in Raleigh.  It is a dark money group, and does not appear on the NC Board of Elections or national political money site Open Secrets.  Before working with Berger, Knight was a political operative for establishment US Senate leader Mitch McConnell on campaigns.

If Brinson were to ever get to Raleigh, he would be owned, lock, stock, and barrel by Boss Berger.  Thus some of Brinson's campaign promises would almost certainly be worthless.  Brinson says he wants to support gun rights, but would owe his political soul to the man who killed Constitutional Carry in NC last session.  Brinson claims he opposes illegal immigration but would owe his political soul to the man who stopped the legislation against sanctuary counties for illegal aliens a few years ago.  And those are just the begining.

Brinson also claims to be much more conservative than incumbent liberal "Republican" state senator Jim Perry, but according to sources in Lenoir County, Perry is, in fact, backing Brinson.  One remembers the old saying about birds of a feather.

The real question in this election is should we have a state senator who represents the people of these three counties to Raleigh or a senator who represents Raleigh to these three counties, a senator who is the voice of the people, or a senator who is in Boss Berger's hip pocket.

A comparision of how two eastern senators were treated by Berger on being forced to vote Berger's way on legislation or not shows how much Berger considers he owns those senators who rely on his campaign money to get elected. The first senator, whose name I will not call, is a staunch conservative who was a leader in the House Freedom Caucus before running for the senate and taking major support from Berger in his general election race in a marginal district. The second is Norm Sanderson, a staunch conservtive former House member who beat back a well financed challenge from a Berger henchman in his first primary. The Berger machine recruited wealthy businessman Randy Ramsey, a lifelong registered Republican who had nonetheless been a major Democrat political contributor to run against Sanderson in the primary. Ramsay outspent Sanderson by a lot, mailing a blizzard of postcards, but Sanderson won the primary by a wide margin.

When Berger started pushing the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, which was then the top objective of liberal Governor Roy Cooper's agenda, Berger's operatives pressured the first senator to vote for it, while they left Sanderson alone and he voted against it without any attempt by Berger to force him to go Berger's way. Berger clearly considered that due to the political support he gave the first senator, he owned him, but Berger clearly knew he did not own Sanderson.

Berger's operatives approached the first senator and told him Berger expected him to vote for the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. The senator told them that he had made opposition to that expansion a major issue in his campaign and and promised voters in his district he would oppose it. Further, he was receiving a lot of comments from voters in his district opposing it. Berger's operatives told the senator that none of that mattered, and the only thing that did matter was that Berger insisted he vote for it. The senator pointed out that Berger already had enough votes to pass it without his vote, and was again told that did not matter and Berger insisted he vote for it, too. The senator then suggested that at least he could maybe take a walk during the vote and not vote at all. Berger's operatives told him that was not sufficient and he had to affirmatively vote for it. Further they told the senator that if he did not, then none of his bills would get out of committee and no money would be going from the budget to his district. The sanator finally decided in good conscience, the most he could do was take a walk, so that is what he did. While he did get some retaliation from Berger for that, it was not as total as threatened.

There is only one candidate for State Senate in the Third District who would not owe his political soul to Phil Berger in the senate and that is Mike Speciale. He is the Norm Sanderson of this race. If citizens want to have a voice in Raleigh representing us, instead of beholden to the backroom Raleigh establishment bullyboys, Speciale is the only one we should consider voting for.

Thanks John Steed for your perspective, one we might not have otherwise gotten here on Eastern NC NOW.

I don't want the Raleigh political insiders trying to dictate who my legislator will be. Brinson can get stuffed. We in the distrcit should decide that, not the smoke filled room politicians in Raleigh.

Not only is Berger no friend of conservatives or conservative principles, he is no friend of Beaufort County. Berger was behind the gerrymandering of our last Senate district which was dominated by Democrats and was a majority black district. Berger did that to us because he wanted to get rid of the strongest voice of reason against expensive and unreliable "green energy" in the senate, Senator Bill Cook. Berger was clearly already plotting with Cooper and the special interests to impose the Green New Deal, and Sen. Cook was the guy standing in the way. Berger got him out of the way by gerrymandering Beaufort County into a district that was totally illogical while drawing Cook's old district for green energy cheerleader Rep. Bob Steinburg.

Berger is a total scumbag, doing deals with Cooper and the special interests that screw real Republicans. Any candidate aligned with Berger should be defeated. A candidate aligned with Berger is no different than a candidate aligned with Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney.

Berger was indeed the liberal responsible for killing legislation to end sanctuary counties in North Carolina. He is on the wrong side of immigration issues, another Thom Tillis, whom Berger has ambitions of succeeding in that US Senate seat. When I see Brinson claiming to be against illegal immigration, but running as Berger's candidate, a red flag goes up. Neither are to be trusted.

PHil Berger has played a shell game with taxes because he refuses to cut spending. He gives tax cuts one place but raises taxes another. Real Republicans cut taxes and spending.

In the State Senate race, Bob Brinson still in his first term as New Bern alderman (city council) has already voted to raise taxes. In four terms in the State House, Mike Speciale never voted to raise our taxes. The candidate who is for the taxpayer is very clear there, and on top of that, Mike Speciale was one of the founders of the Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association, and served as its past president. Speciale is for the taxpayer and Brinson is against us.

WE don't need Berger Boy Brinson as our senator.
