Business and Industry Services at Beaufort County Community College recently provided Lean Manufacturing Training for employees of PAS, U.S.A., to help the industry improve its manufacturing processes.

The training is part of a three-year Customized Training Project designed for the company by BCCC. The Customized Training Program provided education and training for eligible businesses and industries and was developed to spur industrial and business recruitment by the state.

"Lean Value Chain" principles are intended to help businesses and industries improve their profit margins, shorten production times and ensure quicker delivery of their products or services. The goal is to improve and structure all manufacturing or service steps by eliminating or reducing those activities that do not add value to the process.

Businesses and industries that have developed a "lean" culture produce very impressive results, according to Merwan Metha, professor at East Carolina University and instructor for the course.

Pictured above, students in the course apply lean manufacturing principles in the production of model airplanes using Lego blocks. Their production of airplanes improved 26-fold after they applied lean manufacturing to the process.

Other classes offered to PAS employees throughout the three years of the project include Tool Maintenance, Work Station Assembly, Basic and Advanced Screen Printing and Supervisory Skills.

For more information about training opportunities available at BCCC, local businesses and industries are encouraged to contact the Business and Industry Center at BCCC.
