Press Release:

When Rick Anderson was growing up in Illinois, he dreamed of a career as a professional baseball player. That dream ended in college after surgeries to his knees led professional scouts to see Anderson as a less than desirable prospect.

But his love of sports continued and that led Anderson into coaching. It was coaching that led him to a career in education.

In June, Anderson's education career led him to Beaufort County Community College where he has accepted the post as Vice President of Student Services. He succeeds Crystal Ange who, earlier this year, was named BCCC's Vice President of Academics.

At BCCC, Anderson will oversee the Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid offices and counseling services. He will also serve as a liaison between students and the college administration, working to address any student needs that arise during the year, a role Anderson sees as similar to his work as a high school principal.

"For me, it's about serving people," he said. "Different ages bring about different needs but I'm here and able to serve the people who need me."

Anderson graduated from Oakwood High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Regis University in Denver, Colo., where he served as captain of the university's baseball team. He also holds a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

After college, Anderson moved to Beaufort County in 1992 to be near his family. He began his teaching career that year as a teacher and assistant coach at Northside High School.

He held teaching and coaching positions at Northside and Washington High and Chocowinity Middle schools before being named Assistant Principal at Washington High School and Principal at Chocowinity Middle School.

Before joining the BCCC administration, Anderson served as Principal of Southside High School for five years. While there, he led the high school to School of Distinction status and raised the school's graduation rate from below 60 percent to 82 percent - a figure that tops the state average. He also spearheaded efforts to increase the graduation rate at the school of minority male students to over 90 percent - the highest graduation rate of that group in the county. In 2011, Anderson was named the Beaufort County Schools Principal of the Year.

Anderson and his wife, DeeDee, live in Washington with their two sons. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church and serves as a volunteer coach with Washington Recreation Youth Baseball and Football. An avid outdoorsman, Anderson enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time.

Beaufort County Community College is a public comprehensive community college committed to accessible and affordable quality education, effective teaching, relevant training, and lifelong learning opportunities for the people served by the College.
