Renowned criminal profiler, crime scene analyst to speak at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Renowned forensic psychologist Maurice Godwin will give a presentation at noon Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the Learning Resources Center, Building 5, at Beaufort County Community College.

    Godwin, who is a noted expert in a new brand of scientific criminal profiling - behavioral crime scene reconstructive analysis and geographic profiling - will discuss his recent books on the topic and his experience in helping solve crimes.

    Using these approaches, he helps law enforcement, family members of murder victims and defense attorneys and is a frequent commentator in high-profile cases. He accurately profiled the Washington, D.C. sniper case and he accurately predicted where a serial killer in Baton Rouge would strike next.

    The presentation is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by BCCC's Learning Resources Center with support from the BCCC Foundation.

    "Dr. Godwin's work should not only be of interest to our criminal justice students but also local law enforcement officers," said Penny Sermons, Learning Resources Center director. "Members of the public will also find his work fascinating."

    Godwin, who holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Liverpool, also served as a consultant on two recent North Carolina murder cases - the Jason Young case in Raleigh and the case of Michelle Bullard in Fayetteville.

    A graduate of Vance-Granville Community College with an associate's degree in criminal justice technology, Godwin earned a bachelor's degree in behavioral science from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn., and a master's degree in criminology from Indiana State University.

    Godwin has written several highly-regarded academic textbooks such as Hunting Serial Predators and has edited Criminal Psychology and Forensic Technology. He has also published numerous academic journal articles on profiling and serial crimes and wrote a book, Tracker: Hunting Down Serial Killers, which highlights some of the cases that he has profiled.

    His face should be familiar to viewers of Hardball, Fox News Live and news programs on CNN and MSNBC, whose reporters have all interviewed Godwin.

    Godwin serves as president of Godwin Trial and Forensic Consultancy Firm in Fayetteville. He has 15 years teaching experience in the criminal justice field and is currently an adjunct professor at Campbell University at Fort Bragg.
