Commented on Loyalty above Principle or Principle above LoyaltyRoger did not invent the technique he just appropriated the Liberal bluster an applied it to his conservative views and found a vast audience that was not being served by the established media. A marketing coup if ever there was one.
Politico had an article by Jeff Greenfield, liberal commentator that amply describes the attraction of Ailes, Fox News and MSNBC. "How did Roger Ailes achieve such devotion? At root, it flowed from one key fact: He approached his task not as a journalist, but as a political warrior. Perhaps the best way to think about what Roger Ailes built is to recall a comment by a liberal US Senator some years back who found great comfort in watching the liberal rants of Keith Olberman, then on MSNBC. Why, I asked, after hours on Capitol Hill, would you watch an hour of political rhetoric?" Because, came the answer, “it’s like sinking into a nice warm bath.” www.politico.com Have a nice cool glass of Kool aid, anyone?

Commented on Loyalty above Principle or Principle above LoyaltyWith the death of Roger Ailes, founder of Fox News and perhaps the second most hated man by the Liberal Media, I noticed a quote from one of the news sources, which illuminates the problem with getting all your information from television (either left or right). I suspect that Rahm Emmanuel learned many lessons from Roger and thus my fear of Rigid Ideologues or Lazy Moderates.
"As an aide to President Richard Nixon in 1970, he prepared a 300-page memo titled, A Plan for Putting the GOP on TV News." "Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers, than people listen to the radio, than people read or gather any other form of communication," the memo read. "The reason: People are lazy. With television, you just sit -- watch -- listen. The thinking is done for you 1970."

Commented on Loyalty above Principle or Principle above LoyaltyApologies for the long reply:
I agree that James Comey was in a difficult position because he possessed knowledge that he felt the public should know, but he was bound by the constraints of an ongoing investigation. (Catch 22) and his duty as a citizen. I cannot wait to read his book. It is sad that most of this information comes after the point that we the public would find it useful. I think one of the points I was trying to make was that our elected, appointed and hired officials should have a loyalty to the principles of our constitution and not the loyalty to people or an ideology that is not consistent with the constitution. The campaign process allows candidates to explain their positions and expand their vision of the path they plan to take. Their objective should be clear. We have too much nuance from both sides because of their need to gather a majority of votes. Perhaps the cure is illustrated by the article recently posted by Publius Huldah. beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on Inspired by Shelly Berman & Bobby or Tony & Larry David & Stan Deatherage & Steve AllenMia Culpa, after quick trip to the digital library, it shows that I teetered a bit, but did not fall off the high wire. The routine was to have an audience member pick "3" notes which Steve would turn in to a melody. Confirmed from Wikepedia. I could not find a clip illustrating this yet but here is another clip showing him at the piano. The last thing I need to do now is try to learn how to play the piano. That would clear the room for sure at the Village Clubhouse.

Commented on Inspired by Shelly Berman & Bobby or Tony & Larry David & Stan Deatherage & Steve AllenWorking without benefit of research, which is a as close as I get to a high wire act, I seem to remember a routine Steve had where he asked several members of the audience to pick four notes on the piano randomly. He would then create a musical melody using those four notes. It was amazing for me as a young boy. Only later did I learn that four notes was 1/2 of the available notes if you don't count sharps and flats, but it sure was impressive.
My morning mission in life now is to research this and see if my memory is accurate. I will do so hoping that the net is secure, because a fall from the grace of accuracy is right up there next to leaking a story to the New York Post.

Commented on Inspired by Shelly Berman & Bobby or Tony & Larry David & Stan Deatherage & Steve AllenI think one could argue that Steve Allen was the thinking man's talk show host. I have no idea why I would have been interested in his show, but the Nervous Don Knots, The sly Louis Nye, and the inappropriate Bill Dana as José Jiménez.
The thinking part came out in his interviews and later "Meeting of Minds" which may have stirred an interest in history for me. I agree 100% with Alex's description. Steve was not bound by any inquisitive boundries. Maybe they should be required watching in schools now. Here is episode 1 season 1 od Meeting of the Minds. beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on My Commentary on Bobby’s or Tony’s Commentary... “Draining the Swamp - Is it more than a Cliché?”As an avid follower of Alex's blog as well as his post on BCN, I freely admit that George Washington and Alex's previous post may have influenced me. I take great pains to provide links to research when I write an article. I do this for two reasons.
1: One it adds an authority to the research 2: It makes me appear to be smarter than I actually am. Readers who pay close attention (1%) to my articles sometimes follow the links in the article to gain more facts. Since I realize the most people don't follow the links, I often just include them to enhance my argument as shown below: beaufortcountynow.com However, sometimes I may appropriate a quote without attribution. In this case the quote Alex referenced was made by Cavett Robert, but I thought I could pass it off as my own. I don't regret the error, I just regret getting caught. I am not sure who first said "Washington is a Swamp," but it sounded like me or Alex, so I will take credit for only stealing good phrases.

I have no doubt that someday we will find an additional energy sources which are viable both economically and practically. I often wonder why simple financial data is so difficult to obtain on many of these alternative energy sources. Taking Climate Change - Global Warming out of the equation and looking at the pure math would be a much better way to determine the viability of wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, and coal production of electricity.

Commented on Judging a Mile Race by the first Hundred YardsThat reminds me of the story about the boy crossing the pasture when the bull saw him. The bull started chasing him and he knew he could not outrun the bull. Then he saw a tree and decided to try to jump up to a limb, but he realized that the limb was way too high for him to reach it. He had no choice so he made his best effort.
Later he was telling his friend about the incident and his friend asked him," Well did you reach the Limb?" His reply "No…. -----BUT I CAUGHT IT ON THE WAY DOWN." Now that is "wide open, with no governors."

Of course I wish you well. I think the last time I slept in the backseat of my car was 1975 after being over served at Jimmy Orr's 'EndZone' Restaurant in 1974. I think we are just at the beginning of individual marketing things over the internet and FB is not a good forum for that. Providing services for companies to market products and services without having to be an expert website operation coding is a valuable tool that allows them to concentrate on the product and not the process. I think you are on the forefront of this growing segment.

Using age and energy level as an excuse is a lame reason for not embarking on a new adventure, but it allows me the luxury of the the "WHAT IF" that you allude to. Notwithstanding the example of Colonel Sanders .
"Sanders believed that his North Corbin restaurant would remain successful indefinitely, but at age 65 sold it after the new Interstate 75 reduced customer traffic. Left only with his savings and $105 a month from Social Security, Sanders decided to begin to franchise his chicken concept in earnest, and traveled the US looking for suitable restaurants. After closing the North Corbin site, Sanders and Claudia opened a new restaurant and company headquarters in Shelbyville in 1959. Often sleeping in the back of his car, Sanders visited restaurants, offered to cook his chicken, and if workers liked it negotiated franchise rights." en.wikipedia.org Some day I will be able to say, I knew that guy when. It will make a good Memory Story with a personal twist that I have used in numerous articles here on BCN. I have no doubt on the success and growth prospects of SNI. I would title that post with the losers lament for having missed the opportunity due to a little thing like age. --WHAT IF?-- "Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; while others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last possible moment, more vigorous efforts than before. Because, on the plains of hesitation, bleach the bones of countless millions who, at the dawn of victory sat down to rest, and resting, died!" Adlai Stevenson

Commented on Memories of the TV Series Movin' OnWhile doing my due diligence for this fluff piece, I learned that Claude was a favorite of President Gerald Ford. Ford once asked him for his autograph.
Quote below: 'Although he appeared, mostly in supporting roles, in more than 50 movies and 400 television shows, the burly, weather-beaten part-Cherokee from Nelson, Ga., considered himself "the highest-paid unknown" in Hollywood. "I feel like an outsider in a business I have been a part of for 37 years," he told an interviewer in 1987. "For some reason, Hollywood's mainstream has eluded me. . . . "A guy who looks like Robert Redford will most often be cast as a hero. A guy like me or Ernie Borgnine plays a lot of heavies. If you're big, they think you're tough. "Despite being famous for touting the idea that the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes, investor Warren Buffet seems to be perfectly fine with receiving tax breaks for making investments in Big Wind. 'I will do anything that is basically covered by the law to reduce Berkshire's tax rate,' Buffet told an audience in Omaha, Nebraska recently. 'For example, on wind energy, we get a tax credit if we build a lot of wind farms. That's the only reason to build them. They don't make sense without the tax credit.' " www.usnews.com

Not bad for a Jewish boy from Connecticut.
“When I was three years old, I had a pretty bad case of the flu,” Magic Dick told About.com in 2009. “My mother bought me a Marine Band harmonica, which is the very same harp that I play today.” He’s been in love with the instrument all his life. In 1992, he and musician Pierre Beauregard were awarded a U.S. patent for an improved harp they call the “Magic Harmonica.” hipquotient.com

Commented on Am I The Only One That Sees The Silliness?Sick Call in the military was always a treat unless your were really sick. The medical miracles performed on a regular basis for combat wounds is an exception rather than the rule. Fortunately, most of those in the military are young and have fewer health problems. That is not true with the Veteran's Administration. I use the possessive "'" sarcastically as it is certainly not owned by the Veterans. Fortunately, I have never had to use the VA for any medical treatment and am not even in the system, but based on the horror stories of past bar-stool philosophers it ain't a pretty story.

George Orwell said that language makes humans easy to control—control their language and you control the people. Students are the perfect fertile ground for molding skulls full of mush into whatever you wish it to be. We have funded our own destruction with public colleges and that curious custom of tenure which does not exist in the real world but does in government and Public Universities.
"You teach yourselves the law, but I train your minds. You come in here with a skull full of mush; you leave thinking like a lawyer" Charles W. Kingsfield Jr in The Paper Chase "When I use a word, " Humpty Dumpty said in a rather scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less." Lewis Carroll

Commented on I spent my first 20 years waiting for my 21st Birthday, then the last 10 looking back at 21The baseball (softball) metaphor is apropos. We just had the opening game of our Softball season in the Active Seniors 'HOOD.' We have numerous players over 80 years old and some still have great hand to eye cordination. Our slow pitch softball allows all batters to hit away. Many can clear the fence and quite a few can get almost to the fence at 258 feet Center Field.
However, I have yet to see an inside the park home run. With a solid hit to the center field fence, it is often a close call with the throw to second base. As the saying goes, the mind may be willing but the legs aren't. Of course, I should not criticize, because I observe all this from the comfort of my Portable chair. You may have noticed that old people tend to repeat themselves as I have in this comment without looking at my comment just 4 days ago. Did I mention that Softball has started and we have some over 80 year old people playing? I think Teddy Roosevelt said something about being in the arena. I don’t think he was talking about lounge chairs. ![]()

Update 4/1/2016 – This is not an April Fool Joke.
Last night we had a nother visit by one of the neighborhoods favorite groups. Banks and Shane performed three sold out shows this weekend. As usual their show was free flowing and they took request. This was billed as a Country and Rock and Roll show. The usual banter was there between takes and I even heard a few I had not heard before. Back in the 1970s they were a regular at Timothy John's bar and kept getting request for popular songs. They put together a melody. explained as a melody because they "knew parts of a lot of songs, but no all of any of the songs in the melody." They closed the event with that twenty-minute melody which is properly named the 'Timothy Johns Bar and drinking Tribute Melody.' Banks Burgess used to be a neighbor of mine when they first started playing. I told him that Deaton Creek is like an annuity for them. They can come back a couple of times a year and the crowd really loves it. That is because most of us can remember seeing them at Timothy Johns, or the Northlake Steak and Ale forty plus years ago but can't remember if we saw them last year at the home, er I mean Clubhouse. As misogynist as it seems, it does not require much math. The women have a very simple chart which really only has one axis, but for clarity there is a Y axis which has been defined as the CUTE range. The X-axis supersedes any other criteria.
