Commented on What Is The Tattoo Deal?We are almost out of the confusion, Stan. Thanks.
The ENTIRE article is from me. The only exception is the quote from Mark Bauerlein. IN the original format, I had it in italics to show it was a unit. I was using the latest Microsoft Word and could not figure out how to even put a border around it. People think having some kind of word processing system makes writing easy. My discovery is that "if you can't cuss" don't use a computer nor a new processing system. In time you stumble into the approach. If you are smarter than me and less arrogant, you just go to "help" for a quick tutorial. Why should a guy who doctors trees stoop to letting it show him what to do??? . . . and therein lies the problem with arrogance!

Commented on North Carolina's Capital Gains TaxYour theory on Capital Gains Taxes sounds good to the investor --- it sucks for the worker who will never have the ability to invest. The gulf between rich and poor in America is widening and the elimination of this tax is another nail in the coffin of the working segment of the US.
The VooDoo of Reaganomics has had enough years to prove what a failure it is. Nothing has "trickled down" since its inception. Plenty has "trickled out" as the rich corps an individuals has built overseas and banked there as well --- all looking for a tax advantage. Meanwhile, the US infrastructure and banks are collapsing from lack of care and renewal. Our banks have little to lend and the collateral requirements slam the door in the face of average earners. I cite, but one example of Capital Gains inequity ~~~ Mitt Romney. His business is stocks and buyouts. He paid 14% tax on millions made killing jobs and businesses in the year before he disclosed his finances to run for President. He is already paying only 14% when the average citizen pays around 25% on average! You may want to cite his "charitable giving" as one of his pluses. I cite the jobs lost and taxes paid by workers in this country struggling to just find work these days. VooDoo is HooDoo ~~~ the last 30 years of rich/poor separation proves it!!!

Commented on The Speciale matterIf such happens again, my Vermeer Chipper is available for you to borrow! It is good and sharp and with its 85 HP Cummins diesel (Manufactured at Whitakers) gets some attention when turning 10" logs into chips!!! Rather than destroy them, the best route is to crank on a cool morning with diesel smoke choking those who sit on the intake chute for "a discussion about this critical matter." The feel of a diesel warming up sort of goes from butt to head like my daddy's old belt.

Commented on Waste of the Week: UNC-TVI strongly disagree with you!
I watch Public Television and it shows much about NC as well. Teachers use it in their classrooms since the programs deal with science / nature / NC and American history. In my view, it is one of the best things our tax money helps provide. They solicit funds from viewers and---if you want to cut the Arts and Philosophy from the education of our NC students, then you are on target. What do we do then, pave more roads and waste money on the Legislative Sessions producing little. OH---lets sell the Dorothea Dix property since it no longer provides for the mentally impaired citizens. Build more prisons for angry people you love to stir. Be sure to encourage all citizens to tote weapons so the courts are clogged with "wrongful death" lawsuits. Give me a break from Conservative BS, if you PLEASE!!!

Commented on The Speciale matterThe favorite pastime of Baptists is "CONFESSING THE SINS OF OTHERS." As a retired minister of that persuasion serving churches in many small towns of the South, I can assure you no one is helped by gossip nor a rush to judgement. My saintly Baptist Preacher father, Dr. C.E. Scarborough, Sr., was the FIRST Chaplain to the Fulton County Juvenile Court in Atlanta. He pioneered that with nothing beyond "helping kids and families in trouble with the Court in Atlanta" as a guide. He came up with the idea that a troubled family could be paired up with a healthy family from a nearby church to mentor and help. As a result, people crossed lines of society in metro Atlanta and many families were helped from their plight. Their children became better citizens from the lessons learned. The back story is even more important. The Home Mission Board's President had a son of Juvenile age who got arrested. Suddenly, Juvenile Crime became a part of his life --- and with it a desire to come up with a way to minister and help. He called my dad to ask if he was interested. It would not have happened without a child's arrest! Juvenile Crime is, by law, a confidential matter. Few people know the extent of the problem. They do not get a name in the paper so the family and child are embarrassed. Facts of the crime may appear, but nothing beyond "a juvenile age person did it" is in the media. Jesus had a woman "caught in the act of adultery" brought to him for stoning. You remember what he told that crowd of "righteous men." HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE --- then he bent down and wrote in the sand. If he were writing right now for our media, what would those words be????

Commented on The Amateur Continues "Leading from Behind":I'm gonna disagree with you on Carter. He was a Washington outsider who tried to make a difference in a closed system of influence. The only criticism that might stick was that he tended to micromanage his Administration.
Just like the pressure on President Obama, the hot head want an instant military solution to everything. The media had their little nest with the countdown on hostage days. That pretty much closed any doors to negotiation as the Iatolla had the news every night and he wan't worth the spit it would take to blow him away. Carter called together the Arabs and Israelis for as stab at peace. It ultimately failed with the assassination of both Sadat and Began by their own people who do not know what Peace means. If you can explain to me how a declaration of war would have gotten hostages released, I would love to hear it. As it was, a Special Forces attempt was made and forever after any President knows a failed secret try could doom his presidency. President Obama certainly knew this when he ordered the attack on Osamma ben Laden. In that case, it worked. Even so there are claims that the whole thing was a farce and the terrorist leaders still rambles the desert. No matter what dismissive things Conservatives say, Obama got Osama when Bush failed. Carry on, my brother with your dismission. You and others have only less than 2 years to carry that bag of bull. It's not working anymore than an attempt to Impeach him. Bush did so many more Executive Orders that it's not funny. Again, read "Worse Than Watergate" by John Dean, big player with Nixon.

Commented on The Amateur Continues "Leading from Behind"I love you, man --- for sure, you stick with your opinions!
Please watch the "liberal" invective in comments toward me. I would more accurately call myself a "liberal conservative." That will drive everybody somewhat crazy. In other words, I try to look at things with a "don't throw out the baby with the bathwater" outlook of the extreme. I personally think ANY President has great angst over Terrorism. To date, no Administration has found a way to defeat it. With Bush, he inherited it from Clinton and the bombing of the Cole with great loss of life and damage was the result under Clinton. Carter was the last true Statesman in the Oval Office in my view. He got the Arab Oil Embargo, but refused to send our troops to take over the Middle East. Bush committed troops and established military bases, strangely, on a proposed Oil Line to the Arab Gulf. He declared the "end of war" with great gusto, but the bombings of our forces continued as if nothing had changed. President Obama is trying to use both Advisers and Diplomacy this time around. Who knows what that success/failure might be. For sure, no matter what a President does, he is wrong in the eyes of some. It is a position where you have to make some kind of decisions. For better or worse, Carter sent Special Forces to free hostages from the Iatolla. It failed in an unexpected sand storm at the rondeveux point. The hostages were only released as Reagan was sworn in so, in a way, Terrorists had a great influence on that election process. Reagan got caught in the "Arms for hostages" scandal as Ollie North went wild. I guess, "Expect the Unexpected" is the only mantra of accuracy for our elected leadership in Washington. My daddy would warm my bottom if the "N" word escaped my lips --- as it did my SC / Democrat / Farmer granddaddy's lips without any guilt on his part. We are both making progress, hopefully, on prejudice. I totally agree with you that "reverse racism" is not helping at all. Prejudice is simply EVIL, in my view.

Commented on Has Facebook become Stupidbook?Stan---I tried an ad for my Tree Surgery on a FB ad page. It showed some unique things about a large oak with 3 trunks I am treating at Teach's Point subdivision. I thought it was a great show of my skills and knowledge.
Low and behold, a bunch of climbers (always 10 times more smart and arrogant than any Tree Company Owner) from all over and great distances began to put up smart ass comments over what I had done. I even did a second set of pics of the healing now taking place on 3 water oaks I corrected at the Washington Waterfront playground. They ranted on despite clear evidence I was using appropriate treatments. I could not do more than block them with FB technology. Meantime, the likes on the ad were costing me much with no business being generated. So much for going "too far and wide" on social media. I hope to use your technology to advertise in the near future. That way I know I can call the owner and get a quick fix on anything going haywire!

Commented on The Amateur Continues "Leading from Behind"Hindsight is 20/20 and become more so with each passing year. I encourage you to read John Dean's insider report on Bush I which came out just before Bush II. If you have the guts to read it, you might get a wider perspective on President Bush who got us into the Middle East War we can't seem to shake! I, too, listened to the President's address to the nation. He sounds more like a Diplomat than a War Monger to me. Despite all the Fox News consistent commentary along with Limbaugh / Hinaty / all other Conservatives on the Blaze Network along with Newt Gingrich (fellow Emory alum)-- all spouting pretend piety over war. I shall, again, respectfully disagree with the dismissive verbosity. I make up my own mind as an Independent voter who leans Democratic. In some ways I play "devil's advocate" so BCN does not appear to be a one-eyed mule of Conservatism. My granddaddy plowed them and one was what he called a "2 - 2X4 mule" = you had to hit him upside his head with a 2X4 to, first, get his attention, then break another one over that hard head to get the message across!

Commented on Imposter-in-Chief is Flying BlindIf we can give a newborn an instant SS#, what is the problem with registering immigrants so they can be tracked and pay their taxes along with a proper ID? Were it not for many Hispanics in Beaufort County, we would have far less skilled roofers and others doing jobs neither whites nor blacks want to do anymore. If you want to get an "inside picture" of the Bush Administration from a proven Republican of the Nixon era, check out "Worse Than Watergate" by John Dean. According to him, the Statute of Limitation was doubled by Bush Executive Order / Cheney was deeply hiding his health problems in the "heartbeat away from the Presidency" position he occupied. The most insightful quote Dean gives is Bush saying, "It would be so much easier to be President if it were a dictatorship---as long a I as that Dictator." After all, he was "the decider" whenever his Cabinet met. Bush failed miserably at every job he tried before getting into politics. He got elected Governor of Texas. He had a magic name, but not the magic skills of his Father who was more wise in his decision-making. Texas certainly has the most sophisticated voters and residents of any state in America! As long as they have their pistol strapped on, they are so, so wise!

Commented on The Amateur Continues "Leading from Behind"Once again, Stan old buddy --- save some space by just saying, "I hate Obummer."
This isn't Beaufort County and the "gang of 4" politics. It is a serious attempt to deal with a serious --- and almost impossible --- bunch of situations on terrorism. Bush proudly declared the war is over after a showboat landing aboard a carrier with the big sign behind him. It was far from over. Roadside bombs continued to go off maiming and injuring our soldiers in harm's way. Too many had to do atrocious things because the "enemy" was so embedded in the populace. That is the basis of PTSD and the atrocious things many returned soldiers have done to their families and fellow soldiers. Any of us who hear reports out of Camp LeJune would differ with you over who is responsible and who has "won." To take on a President, duly elected, over one "questionable elected" like Bush, is ignoring the questions of why we got Sadam Hussain over fake claims of WMD. With his and Cheney's ties to profits from oil and war, it is hard for me to cheer over his being a former President. With all due respect, I think you would be wiser to respect the Office of President without trying to ridicule the man occupying it. I love you, man, but this is over the edge of respect in my view. Chill, man, chill. He is out in 2 more years and deserves our patience and respect as things work out with diplomacy over outright war we cannot possibly win.

I am never impressed with anyone claiming "conservatives are conserving something." It appears to me in the last years education in NC has not been conserved. Voting districts are being altered to try and make a vote conservatives want. I, personally, agree with the Hagan ads. They are forceful and "in your face, Mr. Tillis." What I remember most was the feeling of despair and angst. I had figured terrorists would find a way to sneak in an atomic device in parts and assemble it somewhere to do maximum damage. Instead, they took simple airplanes manufactured here and found a way to strike. The airspace over the US was cleared for the first time in aviation history. Even crop dusters in Eastern NC were grounded. Any one of them could be used as an ariel bomb. I had seen footage of a giant radio control bomber with little jet engines or a kit-built composite amphibian which would likely not be very visible on radar. Now there is a pressurized version with a jet engine. The weapons of James Bond have become real and any one could be used to destroy. In 13 years now, I still feel vulnerable. I am grateful we live far from the central things of Atlanta. Even Rocky Mount is a center for rail and communication for the eastern seaboard. We don't really have a clue what targets there might be outside the military bases within a 2 hour drive from us. Like it of not, we ARE involved. I shall pray for you and Diane as we all 3 consider how this has impacted us and how it still does. God help all mankind to, somehow, learn to co-exist on the little blue ball, 3rd rock from the sun.

Commented on In Remembrance of 9/11Thanks, Diane for the thorough and thoughtful recounting. It is far from over and far from ended, sadly. It is hard to believe religious zealots would be conned into believing Allah orders such death and destruction at their hands. It proves that the same kinds people conned by the Nazis can lose all human conscience if touched in the right ways of evil by evil people.
Those "crazy to kill" people whose hands were on box cutters and controls were even stupid to believe 40 virgins awaited them as a heavenly reward. Further after-analysis showed some of them purchased porno movies the night before they killed. What it shows clearly to me is that sex and violence go hand-in-hand. A lusting mind can turn black into white, given enough bad leadership. I hope when Satan met them in that fire, the Bible is absolutely right that an eternity of damnation awaits such people---not any virgins and lust-satisfaction!

I am going to respectfully "agree to disagree" with you on several counts:
(1) This nation was founded with a "Deist" concept over "Judeo-Christian." Some colonies and communities were J-C like the Shakers / Puritans / etc. Every one that was founded to create a Theocracy (God-government) doomed miserably. When Joseph Smith founded the Mormon religion, things got to the point of bloody battles. The same was true over slavery. In fact, the Baptists in America split between Northern and Southern over that matter in the mid-1800's. You could be a good Southern Baptist and own slaves. I am a degreed (Master of Divinity) Southern Baptist Ordained Minister. I know whereof I speak! (2) You project that you are doing good with your "Conservative Agenda." That is not necessarily so! I have watched the Southern Baptist Convention go into a nose dive of hate since the 50's when it started and got serious into the 70's when "The Battle for the Bible" ended with a split in the 1980's. In NC, the Baptist State Convention was at a point of split when I moved here from SC in 1986. Our great Seminary at Wake Forest (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary [SEBTS]), was a 45-minute drive from me residing in Rocky Mount. I am a 1970 graduate of that school. In addition, I represented Ministers Life Insurance Company for the eastern 1/3 of NC. My specific territory was by zip code from Durham to Wilmington and all zips to the Outer Banks. I sold to and counseled with clergy of all Denominations. Many sales conferences turned into discussions of what was happening with Baptists / Methodists / Presbyterians / Church of Christ / etc. At that time and into today Conservatives were coalescing with Jerry Falwell and his buddy, Pat Robertson, with headquarters in Chesapeake, VA. They were calling themselves the "Moral Majority." Their purpose was a total mix of church and state with their conservative brand of Christianity as the ONLY way. They were a prime mover in the election of Ronald Reagan. They hated Jimmy Carter and his like---my brand of "Baptist" at the time. President Carter taught, and still does, a Sunday School Class at his Baptist church in Plains, GA. We were the "evil liberals" the conservatives targeted for destruction. SEBTS was the first school of higher education targeted by Conservatives now running the SBC. They had taken over using every trick in the book for voting outside the rules. The SBC had operated in a state of trust which came to a bitter end. It was also one of the most democratic kinds of religion in existence. It was outside the scope of honest religious leaders that such immoral tactics would be used to take over---BUT THEY DID! The "Conservative They" met in airports to devise plans / went all over Texas to deceive naive Baptists that "liberals were destroying their schools." They never could find a real "liberal" to fire, but the very word brought fears of similar kinds to yours~~~that the Judeo-Christian roots of America were being destroyed! I was at SEBTS 1967-70 and NEVER FOUND A "LIBERAL" PROFESSOR THERE. I have other ultra-conservative classmates who thought they were all "liberals." What they really meant was, "I am being exposed to theology / philosophy / biblical studies which don't agree with my little country church conservative prejudices." Instead of growing in their Faith, they rebelled and drew in the wagons to defend the "new ideas" as "evil." That is indoctrination over education. Like the Tea Party they wanted to "return to the old days" despite people dying from common diseases like flu / polio / life-threatening pregnancies / and the "evil women" who got an abortion rather than bring a child into their life when it was totally unwanted and dangerous. Abortion was one of their primary issues. Add to that homosexuality and modern Bible translations to find all the flame issues to divide and conquer the average Southern Baptist trusting leaders to "tell the truth" --- whatever that might be. If it was a Fundamentalist version of "truth" it was the only "truth" for them. (3) The result of the hate and bitter fight was a reduction in numbers and giving by the SBC. They got what they wanted, but when the bus was stolen, they lost large giving churches to pay for the gas it took to run that stolen bus! In a way it was a Philosophy of Taxation and Organization that have helped destroy both the SBC and American economy. The Fundamentalists were obsessed with building Mega Churches. In the same way the Republicans are obsessed with frustrating any Democratic attempt to help the public with programs paid by taxes. No program or party are perfect, but hate destroys anything it touches.

I am beginning to think the speed limit is the most ridiculous thing to the driving public. Most of the people I drive with and around in Beaufort County have more problems with driving in the left lane unless passing than any other thing I know.
If you think it's bad around here, try going north or south on I-95. Lord knows, that is the most ridiculous bunch of drivers on earth ~~~ except any major multi-lane highway in metro Atlanta where I cut my driving teeth. The "bottom line" in my view is people getting behind the wheel of an automobile and forgetting there are other drivers on the road. Cussing out a slow elder drive is futile. Just give them room to be safe without you up their butt! Put on some gentle music rather than rap and CHILL!!! WE now have streamlined and comfortable vehicles to drive. Most of them are now designed to hug the road more than 20 years ago. Our new Toyota gets about 38 mpg---as long as you aren't busting it to get there. With the comfort and speed control, except for the blessed cell phone going off, I can enjoy the ride and get there in a hurry enough on NC 4-lanes blessing our Eastern NC. If you really want a great ride----try the ferry!!!! Lawyers are getting rich over traffic law BS. Just slow down and save---and don't get too aggravated at the Law Enforcement Officers flying past you at 80 in a 55! If I am really late and have to speed, I just follow their example!!!
