They need to give state employees a COLA. Five days off - paid is all we're getting. How is that going to help pay bills? We're about tired of bonus days...we need money for the ever increasing gas, grocery shopping, increase in monthly bills.
(commented on July 11th, 2013 @ 12:26 pm)
Would you consider this to concern your "local folk"? A street in Washington, middle of town. Within 6 MONTHS time the following has happened: a murder, two break ins; two drug raids; two houses that can't keep occupants because of drug dealers...and one drug dealer arrested for selling cocaine within a certain distance of a school....that said drug dealer's girlfriend being pulled on hwy 264 with coke in the car ready to sell. Doesn't get any more "local folk" than that. And one of those arrested has several "Priors"...yet he's free to sell drugs to school kids. It concerns me.
(commented on July 11th, 2013 @ 12:17 pm)
Take a good look around Washington. Get out and ride down the streets in the center of town. Get out and walk on those streets. Places that were once safe places to live are now inhabited by drug dealers, shootings/murders, break-ins (on the SAME road all within 6 months). Everyone turns a blind eye to it. Washington to NOT safe. Sure, the drug dealers MAY be arrested, but they're turned loose and put on "probation"....yet, they are still dealing the drugs. They go right back home and start dealing the same day they get back home. In one neighborhood, there has been a murder, three drug raids, and two houses that can't keep occupants due to drug dealings, and TWO break ins that have been called into WPD. It's a shame when the WPD tells you that they "can't guarantee someone can do a drive by" when it's a single female living in the middle of all this. So, if that's not affecting the "local folks", I don't know what is.

While I've no doubt that this article is well-intentioned, it nonetheless denotes a gross misunderstanding of SB 664. And let me establish here and now that I am not among the "vested special interests" within North Carolina. What I am is a social worker with 7 years of experience working in rape crisis and domestic violence agencies throughout North Carolina. What this article fails to point out is that SB 664 establishes eligibility criteria that only 20% of NC counties are currently able to meet-- not due to corruption, but because those agencies are already working on a shoe-string budget to keep the doors open and ensure that survivors of sexual and domestic violence have access to the services they need. At the same time, the bill makes ZERO provisions to help the remaining 80 of our 100 counties meet the eligibility requirements. And we're not talking here about easy-to-meet requirements that involve changes to paperwork. We're talking about requirements that in order to receive state funds, a given county must have a DV shelter. Currently, only 49 of the 100 counties in this state have DV shelters-- again, not because there is not NEED, but because there is not FUNDING. This article makes it sound as if victim service agencies in NC are rolling in cash, when the reality is that most of us are one bad grant season away from having to lay off essential staff or even close our doors. SB 664 will only restrict that funding further and make it harder for us to do our jobs of serving survivors of rape and domestic violence-- because when it comes down to it, those survivors are the ones whose lives hang on this bill. SB 664 is bad policy. Period.

As an early childhood advocate, I have really not done the research I should have done. When a pre-K program was started and I was in charge, it was suggested that the first enrolled students be followed through graduation. Of course that was never done. I appreciate people who have done the research and have determined that by 3rd grade there is no significant improvement in the Pre-K students. I do think it gives the underprivileged children a good start they would not get in their homes. But is worth the cost. Maybe people who are pushing this should do a lot of research. What is the answer for those who cannot afford daycare or private Pre-k?

The Turnage is a beautiful facility. Lovingly restored through the hard work, sweat and financial support of some very well meaning and dedicated people. I mean no disrespect to any of them in the comment I am going to make. Is it a museum...or a working theater? Until it is accepted that drinks are going to be splilled, walls are going to be scuffed, carpet is going to get stains and that every event is not going to be a culturally enlightening, high brow affair...it's never going to work.

Mr Steed:

TY for your concerns and good commentary.

FYI, prior to HB951 being voted on, I wrote up a detailed Critique of it, and emailed it to every NC Republican legislator. Here is the url .

Some Republican legislators stood up to their leadership (e.g. Larry Pittman, George Cleveland, etc.).

However, despite my attempt to get citizens to speak to their representatives about this, not enough did.

For more info, please send me an email at "aaprjohn" at "northnet" dot "org".

The citizens of Beaufort County need to fight the devasting effects of fracking. Yes promise of much money and jobs but what about the impact of cancer and contaminated ground water from the known cancer causing agents in the fracking agents. Most countries in Europe have banned this technology. Beaufort county residents will have contaminated drinking water and who will pay our doctors bills when the fracking chemicals cause us to suffer and die of cancer? The County Commissioners sold their souls. Now we will be the new love canal. One we loose our ecological infrasture we can get it back or clean this mess up. This is too devastating to fix. We need to shut down th
is hydraulic fracking technology before permanent damages are done.
Reverse the vote. Where are the OLF organizers fornthis Issue.

Mr. Cratch,
For a man of your years you are not a good judge of character. Do your own research instead of relying on a proven liar’s word. Look at the court case I referred to in my first article. Are you calling federal Judge Dever a liar? Look at Ernie’s published comments in the WDN and WITN where he said nothing happened and both Deputies lied. Both Deputies won their civil cases costing the county hundreds of thousands of dollars in the settlement plus hundreds of thousands in attorney fees and other costs driving the total cost above one million I am sure.
I published my information within weeks of people bringing it to my attention. I did not choose the timing of the settlement or when the staff had enough of his abuse.
I did not say anything about Ernie’s support of Trump. I am sure he does. If Ernie told you he is a patriot, I do not question that at all.
If you think I lied by reporting the case comments from Judge Dever, I will say I stand by my reporting. If you chose to believe a man that lies under oath as documented in a federal case, you show a blind following to a man that does not deserve your support and will embarrass you more in the future. I am not finished with Ernie yet. If he thinks being a constitutional officer imparts some special privilege to him where the law does not apply, I will show him it does. Many have expressed their fear of him. I fear no man and will stand up for those that are unwilling or unable. Ernie has been a bully most of his adult life. I have known him since 1984-85. I can not abide a bully.
Mr. Cratch, I invite you to attend one of the many forums Ernie will be invited to so he can explain what he has done publicly and refute what I have said. The first one is January 13th in Aurora. You will note Ernie is the only candidate that has not agreed to participate. Why not? If he feels maligned, show up and say so.

delma, you are right on target. don't back off anything you said. there are hundreds of jails, some small and some big, who overbuilt jails at great expense to the taxpayers. some of the overbuilt jails relied on projections of the architects/contractors - who obviously stood to gain financially if the county agreed their projections. others were overbuilt using the "entrepreneurial" angle - arguing that the jail manager could rent/lease the beds to other counties, the state and the feds. hundreds of these entrpreneurial jails are half empty as the rent/lease contracts never came about, or were cancelled, or were greatly over estimated. and since the cost of the jail was to be offset by the rent/lease revenues, the county taxpayer is again underwater as the rent/lease money is insufficient or in some cases - non-existent. gov't should never get into "business" using the taxpayer as their "investors" - thats not what gov't is about. if the state and the feds are renting beds now thats good because you get revenue. however, if the county needs more beds, all you need to do is cancel the state or fed contract, or revise it lower. there are literally hundreds of jails that "over reached", and their taxpayers are suffering those financial consequences. ps - plus when jail operation budgets go up due to expansion, when the jail has abundance of empty beds, the budgets are rarely "reduced". greta investigation work. great analysis. great conclusion.
