Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what’s happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

BCCC's Automobile Club will sell barbecued chicken plates 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, behind Building 2 on the BCCC campus. Proceeds will benefit the victims of the recent tornado outbreak. Plates are $8 and will include vinegar-based barbecued chicken, potatoes, string beans, a roll and a drink. Tickets may be purchased prior to the sale from any automobile club member or at the event. Thanks to the club members and Lead Automotive Technology Instructor Bryan Van Gyzen and Automotive Technology Instructor Richie Alligood for their work on this. Thanks also to Building 2 Custodian Michael Griffin for serving as event chef. Let's all turn out on Saturday and to come to the aid of our fellow residents!

Here's a look at other BCCC events happening on campus and in the community:

    BCCC Foundation Events

    • In news regarding the Digital Sign Campaign, Foundation Director Judy Jennette reports that a total of 32,119 in donations and pledges have been received for the Digital Sign Campaign at BCCC, about 40 percent of the way towards the final goal. To make a donation, contact Judy at 252-940-6326.

    • Don't forget to register for the 11th Annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament to be held Saturday, May 17, along the waterfront in Bath beginning at 9 a.m. A buffet luncheon catered by Chef Paul Cyr will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The registration fee for the tournament is $35 for each player. The fee includes at least two rounds of croquet and lunch. Spectators may join participants for lunch for a fee of $25.

    BCCC Writing Style Guidelines

    • I encourage everyone to become familiar with the BCCC Writing Style Guidelines. They were developed by the SACSCOC Leadership Committee to ensure that all documents are consistent with the

standards of the college. The official font and format of the college is Arial, 12 point, left and right justified, single-spaced. Please use these guidelines except with appropriate to conform to the required standards of an outside agency. The guidelines can be found on the Handbooks and Manuals Page of the BCCC website. Thanks very much to the leadership committee for their work on this project.

    BCCC Study Abroad Program Raffle

    • The academic year may be winding down, but the BCCC Study Abroad Program is preparing to leave for London and Paris on May 19. The group needs to raise more money so they can participate in

all the activities while they are abroad. To that end, the club is holding a raffle from now until May 14. An assortment of prizes are available including a $50 gas card, free yoga sessions, a specialty cake, and a newspaper subscription. Possibly the best prizes, however, are the two the group will bring back from their trip! One lucky winner will receive a gift from their time in London; another, a gift from Paris. Tickets are $2 or $5 for three. See students of the Study Abroad Program or Instructor Suzanne Stotesbury for more information or to buy tickets.

    Book Store News

    • Book Store Manager Tommy Hodges reports that the Spring Book Buy-Back will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in front of the library in Building 5. Those wishing to sell their books are required to bring a photo identification.

    Gulls on the Run

    • Our new running club, Gulls on the Run, participated in The Great Glow Run last week in Greenville. The event was a culmination of the Couch to 5K training the club has been doing this semester and for some club members, this was their first race. Thanks to Office Administration and Medical Office Administration Instructor Michele Mayo and the club's officers for their hard work this semester and congratulations to all those who participated in the race. You can see photos of the group on the BCCC Facebook page.

    Microsoft IT Academy

    • Grant Writer and Special Projects Coordinator Sara Singleton is the first college staff member to be certified in the college's Microsoft IT Academy. The academy gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to be certified in several Microsoft disciplines. BCCC offers two types of certification – Microsoft Office Specialist and Microsoft Technology Associate. Exams are administered in Room 117 of Building 2 and take about an hour to complete. The certifications are available free of charge to all students, faculty and staff. Beginning Monday, exams will be offered every day so you can take advantage of this chance to add an industry-recognized certification to your list of skills! For a schedule of exam times, contact Lead Computer Information Technology and Programming Instructor Brian Miller at brianm@beaufortccc.edu.
