    Mrs. Callaree Jarvis Horton, age 95, a resident of 213 Lawson Road, Washington, passed away on Friday June 6, 2014 after a brief illness.

    A private graveside service will be held on Monday June 9, 2014 and a memorial, celebration of her life service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends at her home.

    Mrs. Horton was born in Middleton, Hyde County on August 13, 1918, the daughter of Laura Silverthorne and Walter Jarvis. The family moved to Washington in 1923. She married D. R. Champion in 1940 and Wilbur Earl Horton in 1976; both predeceased her.

    "Mrs. Callaree", as she was known by so many, taught in the Washington City Schools for thirty-four years, teaching kindergarten, first grade and served as Librarian, Supervisor and Assistant Principal. Most of her education career was performed in the Washington City School system. She was a member of NCAE and joined the Delta Kappa Gamma Organization in 1971. She also taught kindergarten for four years for the City of Washington churches.

    Callaree was a very active member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and served on most all committees of the church. She sang in the choir for fifty-eight years, was President of CWF, was an Elder, Chairman of the Administrative Board and a church school teacher for over twenty-five years.

    She served on the Brown Library Board, was treasurer of the Friends of the Library (which was part of the Woman's Club), was a member of the Washington Woman's Club, the Washington Garden Club, and the Mental Health Board. She also directed trips as the Horton Travel Club for thirteen years.

    Mrs. Horton received her education from the Washington City Schools, graduating in 1936. She attended East Carolina University earning a B.S. and Master's Degree in Elementary Education with a Supervision Certificate. She was inducted into the ECU Education Hall of Fame in November 2006 along with her sisters.

    Survivors include four nieces: Pam Pelletier of Washington, Mona Harrison of Cary, Jeanie Hensley of Florida and Ada Lou Alligood of Southport; three nephews: William P. Dickinson, Jr., of Richmond, Carroll Jarvis of Bath and Jay Barnhill of Raleigh. Especially dear to her are her "adopted children", Mary and Jim Bilbro; a trusted friend, Mary Alice Chapin and a loved and trusted aide, Christie Ange. Also surviving are a niece, Ellie Barnhill, a great niece, Leigh Campbell and a great nephew, Denton Campbell.

    She was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers: Millicent Pelletier, Mona and Ada Jarvis, Maggie Belle Barnhill, Ione Dickinson, Walter Guy, Merritt and Hubert Jarvis.
