Press Release:

Hagan Declares Her $390K Stimulus Payday Was "Appropriate," Then Dodges Media Following The Debate

Wilmington, N.C.     Sen. Kay Hagan refused to address reporters at last night's post-debate press conference for good reason. Hagan amazingly claimed that it was "appropriate" for her family's company to profit from nearly $390,000 in taxpayer-funded stimulus money that came from the very same stimulus bill she voted for.

HAGAN: "What I did ask was for my husband to get the opinion of an ethics attorney to be sure this was appropriate. He did so. And the lawyer said it was appropriate."

"Last night, Senator Hagan shockingly declared that it was 'appropriate' to profit from nearly $390,000 in stimulus funds on the backs of hardworking American taxpayers," said Tillis for U.S. Senate communications director Daniel Keylin. "The fact that Sen. Hagan thinks such a blatant conflict of interest is 'appropriate' demonstrates how out of touch she is. There is nothing 'appropriate' about voting for the stimulus and then turning around and personally profiting from it."

BACKGROUND: Kay Hagan's $390,000 Stimulus Payday

Sen. Kay Hagan Voted For President Obama's Stimulus Bill Shortly After Taking Office. "Reinvestment Act of 2009 - (Sec. 5) Designates each amount in this Act as: (1) an emergency requirement, necessary to meet certain emergency needs in accordance with the FY2008-FY2009 congressional budget resolutions; and (2) an emergency for Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) principles." (H.R. 1, Roll Call Vote #64: Conference Report Agreed To 60-38, 2/13/09, Hagan Voted Yea)

A Company Owned By Kay Hagan's Family Received Nearly $390,000 In Stimulus Funds. "JDC Manufacturing, a company co-owned by the Democratic senator's husband, Chip, received nearly $390,000 in federal grants for energy projects and tax credits created by the 2009 stimulus law, according to public records and information provided by the company." (Manu Raju & John Bresnahan, "How Sen. Kay Hagan's Husband Won Stimulus Cash," Politico, 9/25/14)

Hagan's Campaign Denied She Personally Profited From The Stimulus. "In a statement to POLITICO, the Hagan campaign said the senator did not help her husband win the federal funding and disputed any suggestion they have profited off the law." A "tempest in a teapot" in a campaign of negativism by Tom Tillis, in my view.

Conservatives can note that Tillis is backed by Fracking and pollution of our rivers and streams with coal ash dumping by Duke Energy. I see to the bottom of the issue of sending Kay Hagan back and those who oppose it.

I am unimpressed by the Koch Brothers other ads saying "we are helping US citizens with our industry." If our water catches fire upon the completion of fracking, then other will say, "By golly, you were right, Gene Scarborough!" When the Pamlico River passes in front of my house, I am more than concerned with what upstream rivers bring to me in "sewage." We all drink from the same aquifers the concept of Fracking will destroy and pollute. If both waters from our river and underground get fracked, It's NEVER GOOD!!!
