Vietnam War Teenage Sailor | Eastern NC Now

I took this photo while serving in the USN in 1967.

This is not one of the hundreds of Vietnam War stories.

It is a story about 19 year old men working on 15 million dollar planes and technical equipment.

The Naval Educational system is able to train a high school graduate in ten weeks to obey any command given by a superior officer. In one year of technical school, a sailor can solve a million dollar weapons system problem.

I think the recruiters sold world travel over technical training.

    Both were interesting.

I'm guessing that was an Ian Fleming "James Bond" paperback in his pocket. His novels were very popular during that era. One of my Navy buddies says he saw the world. "Through a port hole"
