    Mr. Edmund Tayloe Buckman Jr. died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, conducted by Rev. Danny Allen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

    The following will serve as pallbearers: Rev. Lee C. Winters Jr., Mr. Edmund Buckman IV, Mr. Jim Buckman, Mr. Charles Phillips, Dr. William Sherwood and Mr. Robert Randal Capener.

    The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at the home, 136 N. Washington St., Washington.

    Mr. Buckman was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Washington, N.C., to Edmund Tayloe Buckman and Josephine Bowen Buckman. He accomplished much in his 85 years of life. Known as “Eddie Buck” to his family and friends, he served in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. Mr. Buckman graduated from Wake Forest University in 1949. Upon his return to Washington, he owned and operated Buckman Auto Supply Company for over 40 years.

    Mr. Buckman loved Beaufort County and Washington, N.C., where he served his community in several different areas. He was very active in the Washington Chamber of Commerce serving as past President. Mr. Buckman was a longtime member of the Washington Rotary Club having served as President and Song Leader. He also served on the boards of Wachovia Bank and First South Bank, Inc., where he served for 30 years from 1976 to 2006. Mr. Buckman served as Chairman of the Board of First South Bank, Inc. from 1991 to 1996. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on numerous boards and councils including teaching Sunday School.

    In his leisure, he enjoyed traveling, playing golf and being on the Pamlico River. He was a loving and devoted family man and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Etta Carowan Buckman, his two children, Josephine Buckman Winters, of Pinehurst, N.C. and Edmund Tayloe Buckman III and his wife, Victoria Weston Buckman of Washington; four grandchildren, Lee Carmi Winters Jr. and his wife, Anne Francis Winters, Mary McLemore Winters Capener and her husband, Robert Randal Capener, Etta Elizabeth Buckman, and Edmund Tayloe Buckman IV; two great-grandchildren, Robert Heaton Capener and Sarah Ellis Winters; and devoted caregiver, Florence Lodge.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the New Horizons Building Fund, c/o First United Methodist Church, 304 W. Second St., Washington, NC 27889 or the charity of one’s choice.

    “Eddie Buck” will be missed by everyone who knew him, and he will leave behind a legacy of love, generosity, and faithfulness that will endure for generations to come.
