Atlanta, a city too busy to move | Eastern North Carolina Now

We have had many nicknames for Atlanta, Georgia over the years. All of them at one time or another were probably a good refection of our city. But if you ask anyone not from Atlanta, what their worst memory of Atlanta was you might understand this little summary.

To paraphrase the Terrance Mann's soliloquy from the 1989 movie Field of Dreams:

Terence Mann: "Bobby Tony, people will come Bobby Tony. They'll come to Atlanta for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the way. They will ask for directions and you will tell them, Of course, we won't mind if you look around Peachtree Street, Road, Avenue, Circle, Boulevard, Place or Creek if you have a boat. You'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have directions they need. The one constant through all the years, Bobby Tony, has been Atlanta Traffic. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But Atlanta Traffic has marked the time. These highways are the game: it's a part of our past, Bobby Tony. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Bobby Tony. People will most definitely come but they better have a full gas tank if they ever expect to leave".

Look up the Eagles, You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave!".

FOR ONE BRIEF SHINNING MOMENT THERE WAS CAMELOT, IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU

The one constant throughout the ages is the inability of Atlanta to control its wanderlust for travel since Gen Sherman tore up the railroads. At least the railroads provided single file transportation to and from. My old man said that all the roads in Georgia were built using a "Mule's Butt" as a compass. (Well that is a close as I can say on this forum). All our roads are required to have a bend, circle or meandering direction before they can be named after our Confederate heroes. We are in the process of renaming most of the roads but no one has thought to apply some straightening to their direction.

1970 No Improvement

Like Diogenes, we are cursed to wander around in eternity searching for that long lost empty road where we can test our need for speed. Just go down this street until you get to where Coach and Six used to be, Make a left and go for about a mile, then turn right on Peachtree and take the entrance to I666. You can't miss it.

Steer clear of the closure at Marietta and Broad Streets for streetcar track construction, ca. 1901. It is apparently in our genetic makeup.

Update on Atlanta traffic. Inquiring minds want to know.
Which Peachtree did I say? That doesn't make any difference they all eventually end up crossing each other. If you see the Big Chicken, you have gone too far North. Keep an eye out for Yankees and make a U-turn heading south. If you see the Varsity sign, you are almost there.

Welcome back GS, I have been having to carry the load on the political front. You are so right on the continuous construction in Atlanta. We don't have enough room for more roads and yet we continue to add lanes and junctions. Here is the newest project for the 400 interchange in Dunwoody.

Atlanta has always been 10-20 years behind current highway needs. Whatever takes 20 years to change in NC, it takes 20 months in other surrounding states. I can't say I miss the traffic and now that I am in quiet old Bath and Eastern NC, I am spoiled to not dealing with traffic jams.

Blessings on those who have not leared there is better driving most other places than Atlanta . . .

The Link Works Alex. A funny blog post. I live north of Atlanta now and my initial $50 set up for the Peach Pass (HOV-HOT Lane pass) lasted over a year since I rarely drive to Atlanta during traffic rush which last from 6:00 AM until 5:00 AM the next day.

I live in the Atlanta Area. Here is what I said a few years ago about the setting up of a toll system on one of our expressways... forii.blogspot.com (Please copy & paste this link. If I could have figured our how to turn this link into a URL, I would have.)
