Education ... Or is it? | Eastern North Carolina Now

In the world of Modern Education things are a changing.

Cursive Writing
This form of writing has fallen into disuse. For some reason Americans have started printing. The first iteration of this Blog Posting was published almost 5 years ago. At that time my local newspaper told me a decision was pending about whether or not the teaching of Cursive Writing was going to be completely discontinued in the State of Georgia. By now it may actually be a thing of the past.

Don't tell the "educators" involved in this decision but I think many of our schools had already taken this "progressive" step and had stopped teaching this antiquated subject. They probably replaced it with Multi-Cultural Dancing or Social Networking.

Spelling
The next set of instruction that will be (or has been?) discontinued is Spelling. It is being replaced by an attitude that says, Come as Close as You Can and Let Them Figure It Out.

Punctuation
Already gone is Punctuation. In the catalog where Punctuation used to be listed there is probably a disclaimer that says something like this, "Punctuation was once considered a requirement but has fallen into disuse in recent years and is now seen for what it really is ... A waste of time and ink".

Touch Typing
Touch typing also used to be very important but it is now history. My two sons were steered towards touch typing classes by my wife. They probably took some guff from other boys for taking "a girl's class" but in later years they actually benefited from their mother's foresight.

Good News: I have read where there is a strong movement to put touch typing classes back into our teaching curricula.
Bad News: The modern student is going to be taught to touch type using only his thumbs.

    Would I kid u?

Stan, the Age of Information IS the problem. The young don't have to know anything. They can look it up. Actually they don't even have to spell correctly when they look it up. If they come close to the correct spelling, the software compensates & corrects & they get their "wisdom" sent to them.

Great post. It is a fact: Our young impressionable, "plastic", natural resource is not getting any smarter here in the age of information.

In fact, they are falling behind, and especially in math.

I'm not sure that touch typing class is needed. My 12 year old can type 60 words + 12 emojis per minute without any training.

We bring in MBAs at work and no one could possibly read their writing...but no one does because they never have to submit hand-written work. The good thing is that they can read their own hand-written words when they take notes. Most of them don't use paper anyway, as they type on their laptops or tablets.

Smartfella, what classes exist now that didn't exist at Jesuit High School back in the day? When a new class is needed, does the school have to drop a class to make room? I'm thinking yes, unless they extend the school day or get rid of summer vacation. Just a thought!
