Press Release:

The following statement is released on behalf of the North Carolina Republican Party in response to the recent announcement of Governor McAuliffe of Virginia's irresponsible $1.5 billion budget shortfall.

  • "For those wondering what kind of Governor Roy Cooper would be, just look to what's happening in Virginia under his role model, Terry McAuliffe. Governor McAuliffe is expected to announce a $1.5 billion budget shortfall and now Virginia teachers are not going to receive promised pay raises thanks to their high taxes and fiscal mismanagement. But in North Carolina under Governor McCrory, we have lowered taxes to create jobs, invested in education, raised teacher pay and delivered budget surpluses thanks to strong fiscal management. We invite teachers in Virginia to come teach in North Carolina, where teacher pay is higher with a better quality of life." [Dallas Woodhouse, Executive Director, NCGOP]

Background:

Last year, North Carolina's average teacher pay was higher than Virginia's when adjusted for cost of living. http://nebula.wsimg.com/39fac99aa2149b53f35a3140dd30a888?AccessKeyId=CB55D82B5028ABD8BF94&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

Governor McCrory passed the largest teacher pay raise in the country, with average teacher pay over $50,000 per year (John Locke Foundation, 3/18/2015; The News & Observer, 6/27/2016)

Roy Cooper voted to cut education funding by $340 million while serving in the legislature (Report, p.46: "Overview: Fiscal and budgetary actions," Fiscal Research Division, North Carolina General Assembly)
