    Friday, February 17, 2012       Star Gazing       6:30 p.m. - to approximately 8:00 p.m.

Come out and enjoy a beautiful evening under the bright starry sky! We will be taking advantage of the waning moon to observe and discuss deep sky objects. February is pretty much the only time you can see the planet Mercury in the early evening sky, so don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity. This program is open to people of all ages. Meet in the field across from the visitor center. Please come dressed for the weather as it may be chilly. Hot chocolate and coffee will be available.

Sunday, February 19, 2012       Tar Kiln Trail Hike       2 p.m.

How did North Carolina become known as the “Tar Heel State?” Come explore the history behind tar kilns and their important role in North Carolina’s naval stores industry. You will get a glimpse of the past when you come across real tar kilns which ruled North Carolina in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Meet at the Ivey Gut Parking Lot and dress appropriately for the weather. This easy 1½ mile hike will last approximately 1 hour.

Saturday, February 25, 2012       Palmetto Boardwalk Nature Hike       2 p.m.

Join a ranger for an easy 1½ to 2 mile hike through one of North Carolina’s most beautiful wetlands. During the hike you will see, first hand, how Mother Nature can quickly and drastically change the environment. We’ll stop periodically to discuss a variety of things that make up and inhabit Goose Creek State Park. Bring your camera because you never know what we will come across. Meet at the park Visitor Center and come dressed for the weather.
