Press Release:

RALEIGH, N.C. - Eight members of the Bipartisan State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement on Wednesday unanimously selected two nominees for the final seat on the State Board. Both nominees are registered as unaffiliated voters.

They are:

  • Damon Circosta, executive director of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation; and
  • Burley Mitchell, former Chief Justice of the N.C. Supreme Court

The two names have been submitted by letter to Gov. Roy Cooper, who will choose one to fill the final seat on the State Board.

The meeting was the first for the inaugural State Board, which was recently appointed by Gov. Cooper. The Board oversees elections in North Carolina, as well as campaign finance, ethics and lobbying reporting and compliance. Under the newly enacted Session Law 2018-2, the first order of business for the board was to meet to select two nominees who are not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties.

At the beginning of the meeting, N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin swore in the new board member.
