A Republic...If We Can Keep It | Eastern North Carolina Now

There was a sage speaking about education last night on Mark Levin. He's 90 years old. A proponent of Charter Schools versus public. The data, he explained, proves the value of charters. Sadly, Dr. Thomas Sowell says, if we do not change our public system, driven by the almighty dollar, the future may be dire for America.

It will be difficult to correct our public education system as long as we have the State and Federal in control of the money. Want to know what controls your education system and curriculum? Just go to Raleigh. Look at the Education Building and then go across the lawn to the Legislative building and enter the main lobby where you will find a large table that is always occupied by lobbyist or representatives for the Teachers Union. These people walk the Halls and keep our Representatives in line. It is not likely that we will get the "Rot" that has been injected into our education system by "Revisionist History" out of the Public School System and our Universities if we just keeping doing the same thing and expecting different results.

I wrote an article for the "beaufortobserver.net" a couple of weeks ago on "Post Truth." The opening was from Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass." "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean- neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

We have learned to use words to free criminals, change religions, condemn the innocent and change the direction of civilizations since the beginning of time. Now we are witnessing the illumination of one of the greatest experiments, the United States of America, by a lack of correct education and the elimination of morals. Our Public Schools have failed us. Our Universities have indoctrinated our young people to scorn what our forefathers fought for, to secure these blessing to our posterity. They are now stomping on those principles and values. Not all, of course, but enough to bring down our nation if the rest of us stand silently by and do nothing.

The disdain many of our young people have for our American values is because they see the current system as corrupt, and in that they are correct. Our government, at the Federal , state and local levels has veered far from our founding principles. Our's is not a "government of the people, by the people and for the people." It is a government controlled by power hungry politicians and greedy special interest.

The fundamental problem is that we have sat silently by as those Founding Principles have been trampled by corruption. The answer is to return to those principles. A good place to start is to reduce the size and power of government, adopt term limits for all offices and strictly limit the amount of money that can be donated to politicians.

The Government set up by James Madison and the other Founders requires a virtuous public and virtuous leaders ....or the whole system will fail.

At the end of the Constitution Convention, Benjamin Franklin was asked, "What kind of Government have you given us, sir". "A Republic, Madame, if you can keep it, Mr. Franklin replied".

Let us pray to our God that we can keep it.
