Recently released body cam footage from an incident earlier this year shows a tense standoff between police and an armed suspect who allegedly kidnapped a baby.

The footage, obtained by KUTV through a public records request, shows the pursuit and hostage standoff that led to the death of Oscar Alcantara, 30, after he fled from the police with the baby.

KUTV reported that the incident began on February 17 around St. George, Utah, where police were looking for Alcantara for his connection to "an incident where a weapon was brandished." Police located Alcantara and pulled over his vehicle. At that time, a woman exited the vehicle and ran over to police, saying Alcantara was in the vehicle with her child and that he had a gun.

Alcantara then sped away with the child still in the vehicle, KUTV reported. Police pursued the vehicle more than 30 miles southwest, across state lines where the car eventually stopped near Beaver Dam, Arizona.

"Put the child down on the ground, we will not pursue you!" an officer yelled to Alcantara once people had been cleared from the area.

Alcantara then grabbed the child and ran into the brush, allegedly pointing a gun at the child.

"Oscar stop! We don't want to hurt you!" an officer yelled.

As police continued to attempt to communicate with Alcantara, police snipers moved into place. Alcantara hid behind vegetation, with officers saying that he pointed his gun at them at one point.

"The gun is pointed right at us! Gun pointed at us!" an officer says in the footage, KUTV reported.

About an hour passed after Alcantara first drove away with the baby before a police sniper shot and killed him. Officers ran to Alcantara to see if the baby had been injured.

"I got child, I got child, come here baby," a police officer said after taking the child, who was unharmed and taken to safety.

"The shooting remains under investigation by the Mohave County Attorney's Office, which confirmed to KUTV on Thursday that it is still reviewing hours of video and interviewing dozens of officers and witnesses who were involved," KUTV reported.
