Governor Pat McCrory has proclaimed summer 2013 as the season of "On the Road, On the Water - Don't Drink and Drive," urging North Carolinians to be safe and sober when driving this summer.

State agencies join forces to save lives and combat impaired driving

    Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory has proclaimed summer 2013 as the season of "On the Road, On the Water - Don't Drink and Drive," urging North Carolinians to be safe and sober when driving this summer.

    "While summer is a popular time for all of us to enjoy the outdoors and have fun in our beautiful state, it sometimes goes hand-in-hand with reckless and irresponsible behavior, such as drinking while driving," said Governor Pat McCrory. "Please don't drink and drive and look out for your friends and family."

    The State Highway Patrol, the Wildlife Resources Commission and the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division are joining forces to make North Carolina safer this summer. Law enforcement officers all across the state will conduct regular DWI checks, and the Department of Public Safety will release public service announcements reminding citizens to be safe and alert on the road and on the water.

    Last year, the State Highway Patrol investigated 278 fatal collisions and over 8,500 injury collisions during the summer months. This included 88 fatal collisions and 913 injury collisions due to impaired driving.

    Operation "On the Road, On the Water - Don't Drink and Drive" is focused around three key summer travel weekends: Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. The dates are May 24-26, July 4-7 and August 31-September 2. Officers will conduct these DWI checks throughout the state.
