    Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory made the following announcements today:

    Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission

    •   Chief George Smith (Carteret County) - Smith began his law enforcement career with the Atlantic Beach Police Department as a telecommunicator. In 1977 he was hired by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and, over the course of his career with the patrol, worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant. After retiring in 2005, Smith was selected to serve as Carteret County’s Emergency Services Director where he remained until he was selected as the Police Chief for Atlantic Beach. Smith is being reappointed to the Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission for a third term.

    ​The Commission establishes educational standards to certify employees within the criminal justice system, including training schools and instructors, along with promoting new rules and regulations.

Geographic Information Coordinating Council

    •   Stan Duncan (Henderson County) - Duncan has been appointed as Chairman of the Geographic Information Coordinating Council (GICC). He is the Tax Collector for Henderson County. Prior to this, he served as the County Tax Assessor. Duncan spent more than 20 years as a Valuation Specialist for the NC Department of Revenue. He is Past President of the NC Association of Assessing Officers. He represents the NCAAO on the NC Use-Value Advisory Board. He is a current member of the GICC appointed by Speaker Thom Tillis. Duncan is replacing Dr. Lee Mandell, who resigned as Chairman.

    The Council develops policies regarding the utilization of geographic information and technologies related to the field. The Council seeks to further cooperation among state, federal, academic and private institutions in order to improve accessibility and cost-efficiency of North Carolina's geographic information.
