Update (1/8) - Potential Weather Hazards This Week | Eastern NC Now

    Good Morning Everyone,

    Our office continues to monitor this week's temperatures and the potential for winter precipitation over the weekend. Updated details for Beaufort County include:

    Cold Temperatures

    We will continue to experience cold temperatures through the weekend and for most of next week, with forecasted daytime highs in the low 40s (windchills of upper 30s) and nighttime lows in the low 20s (windchills in the upper teens.)

• Tomorrow will be our coldest day, with a daytime high of (windchill of 29) and a nighttime low of 21 (windchill of 12 at 6am tomorrow morning.)
• A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for Eastern NC from 1am to 9am tomorrow morning.
• Next Monday will be our warmest day, with a high of 51 and a nighttime low of 29.

    Snow / Ice / Rain

    Precipitation is expected to move into our area around 10pm Friday night and continue through 8am Saturday morning. This will most likely begin as snow, and transition to freezing rain / rain around 4am. Most areas are forecasted to receive about 1/2 inch of snow with 1/10th of an inch of ice possible for some areas. Our temperatures are expected to be above 40 degrees (windchill of 34) by 10am Saturday morning, with any accumulations that may occur melting during the day.

    Reminders

    We encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions to safely protect you family, homes, and pets from these freezing temperature over the coming days. Recommended precautions include:

• Utilize safe heating practices in your home. (Only use UL approved space heaters. Ensure heaters are at least 3 feet away from furniture and other combustible items. Make sure that you have working smoke alarms. Homes that utilize gas appliances should also have working carbon monoxide alarms as well.)
• Ensure exposed plumbing fixtures are wrapped to prevent freezing and familiarize yourselves with the location of your water shutoffs and / or water meter so that any leaks can quickly be shut off.
• Ensure that outside pets and livestock have adequate shelter to protect them from wind, rain, or frozen precipitation. Also ensure that they continue to have access to water that is not frozen.
• Please avoid driving between 10pm Friday night and 9am Saturday morning as our roadways, especially bridges and overpasses may be treacherous.

    We encourage everyone to monitor this developing forecast and plan accordingly. We will continue to pass along information as we receive it.
