Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

I hope everyone enjoyed the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and that you were able to enjoy the snow on Tuesday night. Despite an abbreviated work week, the students, faculty and staff here at BCCC were busy with a variety of projects.

Here's a quick look at just some of the activities this week at BCCC:

    BCCC Board of Trustees

    • BCCC played host this week to a regional training session of the N.C. Association of Community College Trustees attended by about 40 community college trustees and college presidents. The meeting focused on the role of boards of trustees in student success at their colleges. We received information about student success initiatives taking place nationwide and ways of evaluating student success through performance measures, data-driven models and key performance indicators. My thanks to the members of the BCCC Board of Trustees who took time out from their busy schedules to attend this training.

    BCCC Foundation News

    • Donations to the Foundation can now be made via the Internet on the Foundation's page on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu. Donors can choose specific projects or events including the digital sign campaign, emergency grant fund, endowed scholarship fund, memorials or honorariums, the golf tournament, the croquet tournament, trips or general support.

    • The Foundation is seeking nominations for BCCC Ambassadors for the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Those selected as Ambassadors will receive a one-year tuition scholarship and will help the college market its programs and services. To be considered for the program, students must be nominated by a faculty member and meet the following minimum qualifications: A high level of commitment to BCCC; a neat appearance and outgoing personality; good verbal communication and presentation skills; poise and ability to make a positive first impression; scheduling flexibility, and have their own transportation. Ambassadors are expected to have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher at the time of nomination and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better each semester they serve as Ambassadors. The deadline for faculty nominations for BCCC Ambassadors is Friday, Feb. 8. For more information about the Ambassador program, interested persons can contact Marcia Norwood in the BCCC Foundation office at 940-6218 or by email at marcian@beaufortccc.edu.

    Business and Industrial Technology

    • Mark your calendars for a week of exciting events! Planning is under way for a series of events to mark Advanced Manufacturing Career Week at BCCC during the week of April 7 through 11. Among the events being planned are an Open House for current and prospective students and their parents, a Career Fair, industry tours by BCCC students and Free Day at BCCC, a chance for those interested in attending college to sample classes here at BCCC free of charge. Thanks to N.C. Advanced Manufacturing Alliance Coordinator Darwin Richards and NCAMA Recruiter Juanita Gardner and their team for organizing these exciting events.

    Career Coach

    • I am pleased to announce the launch of a new career exploration tool available to students, prospective students and members of the community free of charge. Known as Career Coach, the career exploration tool is available on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu. The real-time information is customized to BCCC's geographic region and includes detailed wage estimates and up-to-date job postings associated with any career. Career Coach users will also be directed to related instructional programs at BCCC when searching for specific jobs. If a career doesn't look like the right fit, individuals can search for similar jobs and see the skills needed to move to that career.

    Student Services:

    • Planning continues for Gullfest a new event at Beaufort County Community College that will be held outdoors on the BCCC campus Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The purpose of this event is to enhance the connection between the college and the community it serves. It will also give our college clubs and service organizations a chance to raise money for their various activities throughout the year. In addition to local vendors, the event will include live music by local performers, a live broadcast by 103.3 radio station, a car show sponsored by the BCCC Automotive Club, an event for children to experience trucks and farm equipment, a paintball competition, and other activities. Student groups are being encouraged to participate by holding fund-raising events during the festival. Members of the BCCC faculty and staff are being given the first opportunity to request a vendor space. For more information about vendor spaces, contact Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards.

    • East Carolina University's renowned football coach Ruffin McNeill will share his message of achieving success on and off the playing field as the keynote speaker at a celebration of Black History Month at BCCC. The event will also feature choirs from local high schools and Martin Community Action, Inc., and a testimonial by Daniel Garcia, a BCCC student. It will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Multi-purpose Room of Building 10 on the BCCC campus. It is offered free of charge to the public. The theme of the celebration is "Breaking Every Chain." The event is sponsored by Men of Success, a male mentoring club at BCCC with the goal of promoting achievement among the college's minority male students. Thanks to Director of Admissions and Recruitment Daniel Wilson and the Men of Success for organizing this outstanding event.
