Ruby F. Wallace | Eastern North Carolina Now

Born: August 18, 1936, Died: February 12, 2018

Ruby Ellen Farmer Wallace of Goldsboro, N.C. died Monday, February 12, 2018 at the Brian Center Southpoint, Durham, N.C. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, N.C.

Ms. Wallace graduated from Washington High School in 1954. In 1960, she moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. where she worked as a secretary for the federal government. She enjoyed new friends and access to Wake Forest basketball tickets. Ms. Wallace then transferred to Bowling Air Force Base, Washington, DC, to work as a medical secretary. She attended the many activities in the area, including open air concerts. She loved living near her favorite uncle, F. Hilton Buck.

Ms. Wallace was then transferred to Seymour Air Force Base, Goldsboro, N.C. to work as a medical secretary in the flight surgeon's office. After she retired, her secretarial skills led to her teaching basic typing and computer skills in the Continuing Education Dept. of Wayne Community College. She also took many courses that interested her that were available at WCC. Her interest in the Arts led to her helping with make-up in the local theater and participating in the Jug Band (where she played washboard, the spoons, and the tub bass.) Ms. Wallace also became a freelance writer focusing on wrestling for a local weekly paper and a magazine about women wrestlers. Being back in NC, she learned to love another basketball team-the UNC Tar Heels.

Ms. Wallace is survived by her brother, George Lawrence Farmer and wife Ann of Durham, NC and her sister, Ms. Frances E. Farmer of Washington, NC. She also has two nieces, Amy Farmer Light (Damon) of Raleigh, NC and Susan Farmer Sewell (David) of Hilton Head Island, SC. She also has five great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the Brian Center Southpoint, Durham, NC for their exceptional care of Ms. Wallace for the past 13 months, and to Duke Hospice for their assistance in her last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Beaufort County Humane Society, P.O. Box 33, Washington, N.C. 27889
