Calls have been growing for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to be removed from her roles in GOP leadership ever since she voted in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump last month.

On Monday, Cheney got a boost from one of her fellow members of the Republican establishment when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) voiced his support for her.

"Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them," McConnell told CNN. "She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation."

Cheney was one of ten Republicans in the House who joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump in the wake of the Capitol riots. Last week, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) traveled to Cheyenne to urge the people of Wyoming to oust Cheney, who he referred to as a "beltway bureaucrat turned fake cow girl."

"There are basically two things that Liz Cheney has done in the United States Congress: frustrate the agenda of President Trump and sell out to the forever war machine," Gaetz told the crowd of Wyoming voters.

Gaetz claimed that Cheney spent the past four years undermining Trump's agenda, and that she wants to put our troops in harms way by engaging America in endless wars.

"We were told by Liz Cheney and all of the globalists that if [we] accepted globalism we would export America's best crops, best products, best services, and instead, all too often we are exporting America's bravest patriots to die in distant lands," he said.

"A nation that sends its best to go fight in the worst places in the world should not send its worst to be representatives in the United States Congress," Gaetz added.

Cheney and McConnell are both known to be members of the old-school Republican establishment, so at a time when the party is seemingly more divided than ever, it's no surprise that he has her back. It remains to be seen if McConnell's support will actually help or hurt Cheney in the end, however.
