Thanks to Trump tariffs, federal budget was in surplus for month of June | Eastern NC Now

Trump-onomics is winning for America

ENCNow

The June numbers from the US Treasury showed something that has not been seen in quite a few years, a surplus.  That is mostly due to President Trump's tariff policies.

For the month of June, the federal government took in over $27 Billion more than it spent.  In May, it had shown a deficit of $316 Billion.  In June, receipts, mostly boosted by tariffs, were up 13%, while spending, largely due to DOGE cuts, was down 7%.  Year to date, which is the fiscal year from last September, shows receipts up 7% and spending up 6%.

For America's first century and a bit beyond, the federal government ran almost entirely on tariffs as its principal revenue source.  Indeed, a major point of friction between the north and south before the War Between the States was over tariffs because the import / export economy of the south resulted in that region paying 90% of the tariffs for the whole country, and the north was constantly trying to raise them.  This came to a head first in the Nullification crisis under Andrew Jackson when Jackson got Congress to pass a major tariff increase and the South Carolina legislature responded by passing a bill to nullify the tariff in their state and refuse to collect the increase.  It came to a head again when the 1860 election produced a pro-tariff increase president and a pro-tariff increase congress and in March 1861, the Morrill Tariff was passed, tripling the tariff rates.  That tariff was a big factor in the south seeking its independence and the north invading to keep its cash cow from escaping the barn.

We need more cuts to federal spending, but the tariffs are working great and with no inflation.
