Spain's Socialists heavy defeat in former stronghold suggests early nat'l election | Eastern NC Now

Extremadura provincial election swings heavily to the right

ENCNow

Spain's governing Socialist Party is staggering under a raft of major scandals that have led to calls for early national elections.  Those calls are even louder after Sunday's big defeat for the Socialists in their former stronghold province of Extremadura.

Of the 65 seats in Extremadura's legislature, the Socialists won only 18, by far their lowest total ever in a province they had governed for decades.  The parties of the right won 40 seats, with the traditional conservative Popular Party winning 29 and the populist nationalist anti-immigration Vox Party doubling its seats to 11.  A coalition government between the Popular Party and Vox is expected.

Extremadure was Spain's only election Sunday.  Like most European countries, local elections are scattered at different dates instead of grouped at one time.
