Between 90,000 and 100,000 Americans are living with sickle cell disease today and approximately 125 infants are born with it every year in North Carolina - 25 of them in eastern North Carolina. September has been designated National Sickle Cell Awareness Month to increase awareness of their plight.

Growing up for each of us is so different. My friend next door had a father who was a butcher, so guess what; they ate a lot of meat. His cousin, who lived one floor below him, had a dad who was a mechanic. He owned his own gas station and repair shop.

I am in the helping profession. As a doc, I get to help people everyday. Not only do I help them understand their illness, but I hope I help them successfully deal with the worst illness known to humankind- as they used to say in the 1960's- the big "C".
